Burgess1, Anthony (1917-93), English novelist and critic; pseudonym of John Anthony Burgess Wilson. One of his best-known novels is A Clockwork Orange (1962), a disturbing, futuristic vision of juvenile delinquency, violence, and high technology. Burgess2, Guy (Francis de Moncy) (1911-63), British Foreign Office official and spy. Acting as Soviet agent from the 1930s, he worked for MI5 while ostensibly employed by the BBC.
