WORD TRENDS
The e-commerce site Amazon has a section labelled 'Where's My Stuff?' to help customers find out about undelivered orders. The use of such a vague, casual term in an official context is an example of the informality of Internet language and, increasingly, of English in general. Though first found in Middle English, the noun stuff can also be seen as a very 21st century word, with the Oxford English Corpus showing that it's become steadily commoner since 2000. It tends now to refer to objects or material (we began writing new stuff straight away, techniques for getting us to buy new stuff) or to actions and events in general (interesting stuff is happening) rather than to physical matter (a girl with red and green stuff in her hair), and generally has positive connotations (it's usually found attached to words like good, new, great, interesting, and cool).
