Baghdad
/ˈbægdæd/- the capital of Iraq, on the River Tigris; pop., 6,194, 800 (est. 2009). A thriving city under the Abbasid caliphs in the 8th and 9th centuries, it was taken by the Ottoman sultan Suleiman in 1534 and remained under Ottoman rule until the First World War.
