Salvador
/ˈsælvədɔː(r)/- a port on the Atlantic coast of eastern Brazil, capital of the state of Bahia; pop. 2,892,625 (2007). Founded in 1549, it was the capital of the Portuguese colony until 1763, when the seat of government was transferred to Rio de Janeiro.
