Poznań
/ˈpɔːznɑːnjə,〈波兰〉ˈpɒznaɲ/- a city in NW Poland; pop. 564,035 (2007). An area of German colonization since the 13th century, it was the centre of Polish power in the 15th-17th centuries, but passed to Prussia in 1793. It was under German control almost continuously until the First World War, and was overrun by the Germans again in 1939.
