Peshawar
/pəˈʃɔːə(r)/- the capital of North-West Frontier Province, in Pakistan; pop. 1,390,900 (est. 2009). Mentioned in early Sanskrit literature, it is one of Pakistan's oldest cities. Under Sikh rule from 1834, it was occupied by the British between 1849 and 1947.
