late 18th cent.: named after either of two houses in southern England, Moor Park in Sussex, the home of Sir William Temple (1628-99), or Moor Park in Hertfordshire, the home of George, Lord Anson (1697-1762). Both men are credited with first cultivating the fruit in England.
