是天主教历史上在位时间第八短的教皇，在位仅仅二十四日，他是由神圣罗马帝国皇帝亨利三世提名因而当选成为教皇，未当选时是Brixen的主教。传言他对亨利三世不忠导致被毒害，更有可能是死于疟疾。

He was the second of the German pontiffs nominated by Emperor Henry III. A native of Bavaria, he was the third German to become Pope and had one of the shortest papal reigns. He was bishop of Brixen when the Emperor raised him to the papacy.
