Christian III (12 August 1503 – 1 January 1559) reigned as king of Denmark and Norway from 1534 until his death. He was the eldest son of King Frederick I and Anna of Brandenburg.

Inspired by his tutors, who were devout Lutherans, Christian established Lutheranism as the state religion of his realms in a reformation. After being state religion for several centuries after Christian III, the Lutheran church now has the status of the "People's Church" in the Constitution of Denmark (1849). In Norway, Lutheranism remained the official state religion until a constitutional revision in 2012. Although the Church and State in Norway is separated, the Kingdom of Norway is still headed by a monarch who by the Constitution must be confessor to the Lutheran-Evangelic religion. The bishops and priests of Norway and Denmark, in contrast to Church of Sweden and the Anglican Church, are not consecrated through Apostolic Succession. The ordination of priests carries no sacramental status in the Kingdoms of Denmark and Norway. The Monarch is the head of the Church, and has been so since the beginning of the reformation of Christian III.
