本鱼分布于西太平洋区，包括菲律宾、印尼、中国南海、东海、日本、**、越南、马来西亚、澳洲北部、新几内亚、所罗门群岛、瑙鲁、斐济群岛、马里亚纳群岛、马绍尔群岛、密克罗尼西亚、帕劳等海域。 该物种的模式产地在安汶岛。

The Pearlscale Butterflyfish (Chaetodon xanthurus) is a species of butterflyfish (family Chaetodontidae) also known as Yellow-tailed Butterflyfish or Philippines Chevron Butterflyfish (the Chevron Butterflyfish is an unrelated species of Chaetodon). It is found on or around the reefs of the central Indo-Pacific region from Indonesia and the Philippines north to the Ryukyu Islands.
