卫星导航系统是覆盖全球的自主地利空间定位的卫星系统，允许小巧的电子接收器确定它的所在位置 (经度、纬度和高度)，并且经由卫星广播沿着视线方向发送的时间信号精确到10米的范围内。接收机计算的精确时间以及位置，可以作为科学实验的参考。

It allows small electronic receivers to determine their location (longitude, latitude, and altitude/elevation) to high precision (within a few metres) using time signals transmitted along a line of sight by radio from satellites. The signals also allow the electronic receiver to calculate the current local time to high precision, which allows time synchronisation. A satellite navigation system with global coverage may be termed a global navigation satellite system (GNSS). The system can be used for navigation or for tracking the position of something fitted with a receiver (satellite tracking).
