拟杆菌门(Bacteroidetes)包括三大类细菌，即拟杆菌纲、黄杆菌纲、鞘脂杆菌纲。它们的相似性体现在核糖体16S RNA。

很多拟杆菌纲的细菌种类生活在人或者动物的肠道中，有些时候成为病原菌。在粪便中，以细胞数目计，拟杆菌属(Bacteroides)是主要微生物种类。

黄杆菌纲主要存在于水生环境中，也会在食物中存在。多数黄杆菌纲细菌对人无害，但脑膜脓毒性金黄杆菌(Chryseobacterium meningosepticum)可引起新生儿脑膜炎。黄杆菌纲还有一些嗜冷类群。

鞘脂杆菌纲重要类群为噬胞菌属(Cytophaga)，在海洋细菌中占有较大比例，可以降解纤维素。

The phylum Bacteroidetes is composed of three large classes of Gram-negative, nonsporeforming, anaerobic or aerobic, and rod-shaped bacteria that are widely distributed in the environment, including in soil, sediments, and sea water, as well as in the guts and on the skin of animals.
