第四纪

第四纪（英语：Quaternary Period）是地质时代中的最新的一个纪，包括全新世和更新世两个世。第四纪前是新近纪。它从约260万年前开始，一直延续至今。

第四纪这个名称最早是意大利地质学家乔万尼·阿尔杜伊诺（Giovanni Arduino）于1759年研究波河河谷沉积情况时提出的。1829年，法国地质学家儒勒·迪斯努瓦耶（Jules Desnoyers）引用了这个定义。他在研究塞纳河低地的沉积层时发现了一层比新近纪更新的岩层。这个岩层一直延伸到地表。
