在一个原碳酸分子中，碳原子与4个羟基以共价键相连。这种化合物至今未被发现，因为它极不稳定，立刻分解为二氧化碳和水。 原碳酸是一种四元酸，理论上可以形成4种盐，比如NaH₃CO₄（原碳酸三氢钠）、 Na₂H₂CO₄（原碳酸二氢钠）、Na₃HCO₄（原碳酸一氢钠）、和 Na₄CO₄（原碳酸钠）。

原碳酸可以作为官能团。例如，它可以形成原碳酸四乙酯，可以用硝基三氯甲烷和乙醇钠在乙醇中制取。 另外，聚原碳酸稳定，可以用于吸收污水中的有机溶剂，或用于牙科还原材料。

Orthocarbonic acid or methanetetrol is the name given to a hypothetical compound with the chemical formula H₄CO₄ or C(OH)₄. Its molecular structure consists of a single carbon atom bonded to four hydroxyl groups. It would be therefore a fourfold alcohol. In theory it could lose four protons to give the hypothetical oxocarbon anion CO4−
4 (orthocarbonate), and is therefore considered an oxoacid of carbon.
