It is located in the Päijänne Tavastia region. The municipality has a population of 16,304 (30 June 2015) and covers an area of 814.21 square kilometres (314.37 sq mi) of which 28.87 km (11.15 sq mi) is water. The population density is 20.76 inhabitants per square kilometre (53.8/sq mi).
