罗姆人（Roma）（常讹称为吉普赛人或吉卜赛人）为起源于印度北部，散居全世界的流浪民族。不过，“吉普赛”一词源于欧洲人对罗姆人起源的误解，当时欧洲人认为罗姆人来自埃及，于是称之为“埃及人”，而“吉普赛”是“埃及”的音变。而大多数罗姆人也认为“吉普赛人”这个名称有歧视意义，所以并不使用。

其他地区对罗姆人的称呼包括了：波希米亚人（法国）、弗拉明戈人（西班牙）、茨冈人（俄罗斯）、埃弗吉特人（阿尔巴尼亚）、罗里人（伊朗）、阿金加诺人（Atsinganoi，希腊）、阿什卡利人与辛提人。罗姆人称自己为罗姆（Rom），叙利亚和波斯吉卜赛人的「多姆人」（Dorn），在梵文中对应是「Doma」，现代印地语是「Dom」，意思是「靠歌舞为生的下等人」。在欧洲罗姆语中，“罗姆”的原意是“人”（故意省略掉“靠歌舞维生的下等”这段）。

The Romani (also spelled Romany; /ˈroʊməni/, /ˈrɒ-/), or Roma, are a traditionally nomadic ethnic group, living mostly in Europe and the Americas and originating from the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent, presumably from where the states Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab exist today. The Romani are widely known among English-speaking people by the exonym "Gypsies" (or "Gipsies"), which some people consider controversial due to its connotations of illegality and irregularity.
