萨路基猎犬起源于东非的一种狗的品种，毛细而长，有种高雅的感觉。是狗种中最早被人类所饲养的品种之一，可以追溯到西元前2000多年前的埃及。在历史上，中国皇帝也曾饲养过此种犬种。宣德皇帝在1398－1435年间所饲养过。在12世纪左右引入欧洲。萨路基猎犬的跑步速度极快，也常被当作为是狩猎的伙伴。
