Meanwhile, tapping its battery expertise, BYD has begun making alternative-fuel cars.

Also, the emergence of less expensive domestic brands like Chery and BYD means more Chinese can afford cars.

BYD is scouting for new sources of lithium, an important ingredient for its high-performance batteries.

State-controlled Pengcheng E-Taxi, partly owned by BYD, a major domestic manufacturer of green vehicles, was incorporated in March 2010.

BYD planned to launch the e6 in the US in the first quarter of 2012, he said.

Li reiterated BYD's target of selling 800, 000 cars in China this year, which he said would be up from 480, 000 units sold in 2009.

This gives BYD a unique selling point: The ability to produce electric and hybrid cars at lower cost than in the West.

BYD was fined for obtaining land improperly for a factory in Xi'an.

BYD, which doesn't rank among China's top ten carmakers, is displaying four models including a hybrid sedan at the Detroit motor show.

Two years ago BYD symbolised China's glorious prospects.

Trained as a researcher in Beijing, Mr Wang founded BYD in 1995, when China's government was opening its economy to the world.

"BYD is a key player in the world market, " says Duan Chengwu, an auto industry analyst with Global Insight, based in Shanghai.

BYD has a lot on its plate for the next few years.

BYD is big, but the role-model for a Chinese "shooting star" is Baidu.

That's part of the reason that BYD, since introducing a hybrid electric in December, has sold just 80 of them.

Along the way, BYD promised to sell America its first purely electric sedan.

BYD's share price is now about one-third of its 2009 peak.

INVESTORS WHO have owned shares all year of BYD, a Chinese maker of cellphone batteries and components, can't say the ride has been dull.

Mr. Li is a contrarian investor, loading up on BYD shares when they were beaten down.

After starting life as a maker of rechargeable batteries, BYD built its first branded car in 2005.

BYD said its profit for the first half of the year could plunge by as much as 95% because of a drop in car sales.

Earlier this summer, BYD shares plunged after a disappointing earnings report.

The new energy vehicle component of BYD's stand at the show was surprisingly low-key.

BYD's sales, meanwhile, were down 19 per cent from the previous year in August and down 25 per cent in September.

So BYD must have sold over $3 billion worth of "new energy vehicles, " right?

Although analysts don't expect BYD managers to receive prison time, there is financial risk for the carmaker.

BYD is suffering because its conventional cars, at first perceived as cheap, small and trendy, are now perceived as just cheap and small.

That goal was ambitious anyway, given that BYD's annual capacity is far below that level.

China's Ministry of Land and Resources also hit BYD with a 2. 95 million yuan ($442, 000) fine, the ministry said on its website Wednesday.

BYD saw sales rise just 3. 2% on year and the company looks like it will struggle to meet its annual target of 800, 000 vehicle sales.

BYD, a Chinese maker of electric cars and batteries, is the latest contender.

BYD's Xi'an factory, built in 2005, can assemble 300, 000 cars a year.

Soon, several of his friends popped in a shinily new BYD car, and they joined me.

Li Lu, the man once seen as possible successor to Buffett, helped introduce the Oracle of Omaha to BYD.

BYD will launch a plug-in hybrid car later this year, with sales in the US and European Union to follow in 2011.

Nothing much good has been happening to Chinese battery and auto producer BYD Co recently.

Opinions differ on how well BYD's young electric-auto business will unfold.

BYD's F3 model is now China's leading compact-car model by sales, after ranking fourth in 2008.

The BYD E6 electric car, which is scheduled to go on sale in the U. S. in 2012, will carry a price tag of $35, 000.

Because of BYD's size and importance in one of China's key industries, its predicament has drawn attention.

Geely also lags behind BYD, which has rolled out the world's first plug-in hybrid.

The big question: When will BYD's sales of gasoline cars rebound?

BYD electric cars takes requires only 10 mins for a 50 percent charges and that takes you 180 km.

The city is also in talks to buy all-electric buses from BYD, which might eventually set up a factory to supply those e-buses to the city.

BYD F3 model using a national tour in various parts of the listing, but mainly to second-tier cities such as Xi'an, Jinan.

Analysts say they expect BYD's market share in the handset-parts arena to rise.

Mr. Sokol went to China and when he returned, he and Mr. Munger convinced Mr. Buffett to load up on BYD.

"There are a lot things that need to be done to fix BYD, but I don't think it's terminal, " says Mr Russo.

In addition to convincing consumers to try untested technology, BYD has to fight mistrust in the West of Chinese-produced goods.

He recently bought a stake in BYD, an aspiring maker of electric cars.

BYD's major competitive advantage is that it develops world-leading battery technology in-house.

Asked to sum up how BYD built its business, he offers a modest response.

BYD will show a plug-in battery car model at Berkshire's annual meeting.

Wang Chuanfu, chairman of BYD, said recently that the car maker is aiming to become the world's largest auto maker by 2025.

Buffett's announcement sent shares in Wang's company, BYD, surging 387 percent this year.

The BYD E6 is an electric-only powered car, the second model of new-energy cars developed by BYD after the F3DM.

Mr. Wang co-founded BYD in 1995, initially focusing on making batteries for cell phones.

How about a BYD Technology Center in Detroit?

If this helps temper BYD's bullishness, that may be no bad thing.

The quietly spoken Mr Wang says his goal is to make BYD the world's largest car company by 2025.

BYD began operating in 1995 with 20 employees, according to Wang, and doubled its profit to 1. 12 billion yuan in 2006 from a year earlier.

'By synthesizing good ideas in China from Toyota and others, BYD created its own cars quickly, ' he says.

Daimler has joined up with Chinese battery maker BYD to build electric vehicles for the Chinese market.

This is because that BYD has adopted effective cost control and reverse engineering in the auto manufacturing.

One would think that BYD has a major niche in front of it: electric vehicles, longer lasting lithium batteries.

In 2006, Nokia outsourced 15% of its 'handset mechanical solutions' to BYD, while Motorola outsourced 3%, according to Citi.

BYD has yet to bring a single hybrid or electric car to market and has repeatedly missed launch deadlines.

Mr. Sokol, who held a seat on BYD's board, hasn't yet been replaced, a BYD spokeswoman said.

While BYD's revenue and profit growth are real, how can we justify their 246% shareholder return in 2009?

Billionaire US investor Warren Buffett's company MidAmerican Energy, holds a 9. 9% stake in BYD.

In just six years, BYD has become China's leading domestic auto maker.

Since 2008, Berkshire's BYD stake has surged more than six-fold, generating profit of about $1. 2 billion, Mr. Buffett says.

'BYD was Charlie's idea, ' Mr. Buffett said.

The big domestic car make BYD says it will cut its sales force by about 70 percent.

The E6 uses the "Fe, " BYD's lithium-ion ferrous phosphate battery.

If sales per month carry on at June's slower rate, BYD's sales for 2010 will exceed those in 2009 comfortably.

In the end, BYD fell short of meeting even the revised goal.

Last month, BYD cut prices on five of its best-selling models by 20 per cent in order to regain market share.

Last year, Chinese automaker BYD announced it had plans to sell its 5-seat electric car, the E6, in the U. S. in 2010.

Halfway through 2010, BYD is 36% of the way to its sales target of 800, 000 vehicles for the year.

Goldman has a 'sell' rating on BYD, with a 12-month target price of HK$56. 40.

Another flaw is BYD's sales channel.

Buffett invested in BYD in 2008, and it looked at first like a winner, climbing more than six-fold.

BYD has said it plans to sell the e6 model for slightly more than $40, 000--competitive with some bigger rivals.

Li: He is best known for loading up shares of BYD Co. , the Chinese battery and car maker, even when the stock was tanking.

If there is any item can not meet specification, BYD reserves the right to renew the design from vendor without any charge.

Though BYD plans to introduce the E6 in the US later this year.

BYD plans to mass-market its e6 electric car, which can travel 300 kilometers on a single full charge, by 2009.

Our visit to BYD was amazing.

So does BYD Auto, a Chinese entrant that plans to begin selling its four-door passenger e6 all-electric vehicle, reports Plug In America.

Yet, BYD's sales began slumping midyear even as sales in China's overall auto market surged.

The BYD office will employ about 50 people at first but is expected to expand to around 200 in several years.

BYD employs 10, 000 engineers, half of them working on cars, and Mr Wang says he will have 30, 000 automotive engineers within a decade.

BYD hasn't had a smooth ride this year. Net profit slid 89% in the first half, largely because of 23% drop in car sales.

BYD plans to deliver 250 more e6 cabs to Pengcheng by August.

Separately, Mr Wang said that BYD and Daimler would launch their jointly developed electric car in China in 2013.

But BYD, a private company, was naturally not on a list of eight state-appointed "industry consolidators" last year.

In China, the F3DM is priced at 150, 000 yuan, or $22, 000, and BYD expects it sell for a similar amount in the U. S.

BYD's existing Xi'an factory, built in2005, can assemble 300, 000 of its 3-series cars, including the F3 and G3models, annually.

There are also home-grown innovators such as BYD, a Chinese electronics firm.

BYD also plans to debut its first all - electric vehicle, named E6, next year in China.

But this is not just about BYD.

No, this is not a Porsche Cayenne. . . this is the latest "masterpiece" from the Chinese manufacturer Byd, called the T6.

BYD doesn't have a good track record when it comes to keeping promises about the F3DM.

BYD has started selling hybrid electric cars in some markets in China.

In mid-2005, BYD launched its first car, a small sedan called the F3.

Electric-car producers in China, such as Shenzhen-based BYD Co. , assume the program will be expanded to other cities over time.

Last year BYD made a 20 per cent return on capital (for comparison, in a good year Toyota generates around 7 per cent).

The southern boom town of Shenzhen, where BYD rolled out its plug-in hybrid, F3DM, late last year, has just three charging stations.

Last month, BYD reported that its first quarter profit dropped by 84%, compared to the same period last year.
