If you suspect that I'm about to say that EVMS handily solves all of these problems in one fell swoop, then you're absolutely right.

My disk now has a master boot record and I'm ready to create new partitions, called "segments" in EVMS-speak.

EVMS calls these final storage objects "logical volumes, " whether they happen actually to be disks, partitions, or LVM logical volumes.

Before we get to JFS and EVMS, let me share an official update about the current state of affairs in the Linux filesystem world.

Again, EVMS is sophisticated, but its behavior can be a bit confusing at first glance.

This archive contains the EVMS userspace tools as well as patches that we need to apply to a kernel source tree.

Should you run into problems, you can post a message to the EVMS list or visit the #evms channel on IRC (see Resources for links to these).

This is a very good behavior, since the disk theoretically could contain some important data that EVMS simply can't recognize.

EVMS provides a uniform, extensible, plug-in-based API for all storage technologies under Linux.

Don't worry, this series will will be wrapping up soon as I cover IBM's JFS and EVMS (enterprise volume management) technologies for Linux.

Note that EVMS versions 1. 1. 0 and later allow you to convert compatibility volumes into EVMS volumes, and vice-versa.

Our first step is head over to the home of the EVMS project.

The official 1. 4 release of Gentoo Linux (not yet released at the time this article was written) will include full EVMS support as well.

It means that thanks to EVMS, you can use a single tool to partition disks, create LVM objects, and even create Linux software RAID volumes.

Under the "Latest file releases" section of the page, you should see an entry for the most recent version of EVMS.

Of course, you can also simply plug a new hard drive into your existing EVMS-enabled system if you so choose.

Next, we'll apply the EVMS patch specific to our particular kernel version.

Unfortunately, actually showing you how to use EVMS will need to wait until my next article.

The best way to start playing with EVMS is to find a spare hard drive and install it in your system.

Now our userspace EVMS tools are installed, and we have a new EVMS-enabled kernel that's ready for use.

So there you have it, I've partitioned a single system disk using EVMS.
