In March, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell to its lowest levels in 12 years, there was just one IPO filing, according to Dealogic.

It recently climbed back to the No. 1, according to research firm Dealogic, but the fact that it had to stage a come back was unusual.

Global IPOs so far this year are scarcely a tenth of that amount, at just under $6bn, with $2. 3bn in Asia excluding Japan, Dealogic says.

Deals totalling nearly $20bn, a record, have been sealed in 2011, up from just over $11bn last year, according to Dealogic.

In contrast, the mean increase for a Hong Kong IPO over the same period last year was 17. 13%, according to data provider Dealogic.
