Many current DTDs incorporate ways to deal with some of these issues, but the breadth of the issues leads to more than just a DTD.

This approach tends to encode legacy practices into the resulting DTDs or vocabularies.

TEI itself is not an SGML or XML application, but rather a set of guidelines from which languages (DTDs) can be constructed.

It also has a defined set of metadata that might be shared directly with the metadata models of quite different DTDs or schemas.

Then I'll show how DTDs can change the meaning of a document, and how you can use them to help you compare XML documents.

However, a section can be specialized to eliminate PCDATA, yielding an element-only content model similar to the body level of most DTDs.

Quick and Zeus offer code generation from DTDs, but as I mentioned in Part 1, it's generally pretty easy to convert DTDs to Schemas.

Most of them use proprietary XML formats to store documents, but some of these companies have started publishing the DTDs they use.

The read-me document lists several known limitations, but doubtless others await discovery as you use the DTDs.

Things like elements, DTDs, and entity references are discussed in this article without much effort to set them in context.

Certain domain-specific vocabulary could not be prohibited for DTDs specialized for a different domain.

Zeus is simple and easy, but (as with Quick) supports only DTDs and additionally only allows data to be accessed as String values.

However, numerous XML users complained about DTDs including the fact that they use a different syntax from XML itself.

Thus, topics written against one of the supplied DTDs can use all of the predefined domain specializations.

Global declarations are not new -- they were originally introduced with DTDs -- but local declarations are unique to XML Schema.

Providing such highlight styles through a domain resolves a long-standing dispute for publication DTDs.

As you can see, once you get things initially set up, adding new DTDs is relatively easy.

I recommend listing PCDATA first in such a list (as DTDs require), but this is not currently mandatory.

DITA includes a base set of DTDs and framework that allows for specialization using derived DTDs and processing conventions.

A number of DTDs (Document Type Definition) have been developed by WAICENT and are used in different projects.

Currently, XML schemas and DTDs provide the ability to validate, or verify, the structural content of a XML document.

It also outlines how to customize Emacs to make it function with a variety of DTDs.

Now that you have Emacs with PSGML installed and you have a set of DTDs to work with, you can begin editing documents using PSGML.

You also need to consider that two DTDs may actually specify different public and system IDs for the same external entity reference.

One way to develop this communication between A and B is to develop DTDs (or schemas) that match the specific needs of A and B.

Architectural Forms are a way to create special DTDs that allow for the remapping of XML names.

Changes in HTML standards are handled by installing a new DTD (or set of DTDs).

OpenOffice maintains an internal catalog of the needed DTDs and entities.

So, when comparing XML, you're going to want to formulate DTDs that constrain the documents you're comparing as closely as possible.

This evenness in approach is largely due to legacy documents that still use DTDs.

The basic idea behind WBXML is that by taking advantage of foreknowledge of the DTDs, you can minimize the tags to one byte.

However, DTDs tolerate element and attribute names that contain colons.

Entities can be SGML documents, DTDs, or so-called unparsed entities like binary data.

SGML and XML modes aren't much use without incorporating the DTDs to describe the types of documents you need to create.

DTDs allow the assignment of values to attributes not explicitly present in the XML document.

The definitions are called Document Type Definitions or DTDs.

Lack of support for namespaces is the single most glaring deficiency of DTDs.

The eg: occurs attribute has values similar to occurrence indicators in DTDs.

Namespaces: Means of unambiguously identifying XML tags from different DTDs or schemas so they can be mixed in the same XML document.

It is used to ensure that names used by one DTD don't conflict with user-defined tags or tags defined in other DTDs.

You may receive XML that uses DTDs as a constraint model.

The rigidity of traditional schema languages like Document Type Definitions (DTDs), W3C Schemas, and RELAX NG causes fragility.

It was really just an XML variation on HTML 4. 01, which has three separate DTDs: strict, transitional, and frameset.

After creating the domain files, you can write shell DTDs to combine the domain with topics and other domains.

Because the two documents may use different DTDs, they may resolve the same entity reference differently.

This is a basic introduction to XML, DTDs, and XML schemas. If you are already familiar with XML, you do not need to read it.

Extract the DTDs from the zip file and register them to the database.

The third line supports l10n by establishing the location of DTDs that contain natural language strings.

Content and attribute declarations cannot depend on attributes or element context (this is also a central problem of DTDs).

Use W3C specification for XML schemas instead of DTDs or alternative schema languages.

So here's how to add some DTDs and the appropriate configuration to make them useful with PSGML.

Next, you need to create an SGML catalog file that PSGML can use to find these DTDs.

For example, DTDs and schemata such as DocBook offer section elements with explicit and derived hierarchy within the context of a document.

We think that very soon XML Schemas will be used in most Web applications as a replacement for DTDs.

It is difficult to write, maintain, and read large DTDs, and to define families of related schemas.

XML is also rich with embedded meta data and other descriptive entities such as schemas and Document Type Definitions (DTDs).

The editor is an open source tool with XSLT support, and it can also validate XML against DTDs and schemas.

This is where DTDs are weakest.
