The M& A landscape in China has its peculiarities.

North American M& A deals to date total $1, 037bn, according to Dealogic, compared with $1, 624bn for the comparable period in 2007.

In fact, overall M& A volume globally, at $962bn, was 62 per cent higher than in 2009, according to Dealogic.

Global M& A volume totalled $1, 140bn in the first half of 2009, the lowest since 2004.

Japanese outbound M& A was up 97 per cent to $38. 4bn, though remained well below the record of $67. 7bn in 2008.

China has many incentives to keep playing the M& A game, however.

There are reasons to expect M& A in China may get easier.

Inbound M& A fell sharply with $31. 2bn of announced deals in the year to date, a 25 per cent fall on last year, said Dealogic.

The $83bn of deals represents just 1. 7 per cent of overall global M& A last year, as measured by Dealogic.

Global M& A in the year to date reached $4, 740bn, surpassing last year's record of $3, 910bn.
