To the best of my knowledge, every XSLT processor offers at least one extension to support multiple output documents.

The first version of XSLT was very strict. It had one input and one output (although you could have more than one template file).

The top two form elements are a text area for entering XSLT and a text entry field for the URL that points to the XML to be transformed.

Although you can implement all of these using the basic operations XSLT does support, such a program would be both unwieldy and slow.

This was probably a bit of a stretch for Java programmers who are unfamiliar with XSLT.

The debugger can be used to debug a style sheet, or to debug an XSLT transformation invoked from another application.

XSL-FO is often used as an output format from XSLT ( covered earlier in this series).

When you ignore the verbose XSLT syntax and view this as a simple test, the coding is very similar to that of a concept or task.

It may seem strange to start with a tip on CSS in an article on XSLT, but I'm often asked "Are the two style sheet languages compatible? "

XSLT is often used to perform the transformations to human-readable format.

At this point, XSLT novices usually ask how to split HTML elements across two or more templates.

The debugger can be used to debug a style sheet, or to debug a compiled XSL transformation invoked from another application.

In that respect, CSS is redundant with XSLT, which already make it easy to reformat several documents at once.

The XSL Formatting Objects (XSL-FO) standard is one of the least known parts of the XSL standard (the more prominent part being XSLT).

XSLT was not designed as a generic querying language, even though it has often been used as one for lack of a better alternative.

A more complex NITF document example: Download a sample NITF file that was transformed by an XSLT style sheet into a sample HTML output.

The next transformation action uses another XSLT script to query the rule server, in case of a miss in the previous stage.

If you know XSLT, feel free to skip directly to the next subsection.

Removing the namespace from the XML document by preprocessing it with an XSLT might be an option, but doing so might be time-consuming.

So far, the XM plug-in extends the platform with a fixed set of features -- the ability to process XML and XSLT files.

In addition, the fact that the function library is implemented in pure XSLT will provide great portability of your code as well.

The processing of XML using XSLT has much to gain from this same sort of modularization.

XSLT normally assumes that whitespace in a stylesheet isn't meaningful, with a few specific exceptions.

You could now process this XML document with XSLT transformations to generate a document with the format of your choice.

If you don't want to change the XSLT, you're ready to go; all you need to do is download the XSLT and place it somewhere on your system.

This two-pass approach transforms the document twice, with the result of the first XSLT transformed by a second XSLT.

A simpler solution uses XSLT to insert a probe task at the beginning or end of each target.

An XPath statement in an XQuery or XSLT stylesheet might test for one of the predefined elements and also display the known color.

You don't need to use it often in XSLT, but it lets you accomplish tricky tasks that you can't do any other way in standard XSLT.

The mechanism for reusing data is called an Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformation (XSLT) , or simply, a transform .

For this example, the same mediation is applied to two different destinations where each destination needs a different XSLT to be applied.

The template is called from throughout the XSLT to handle the messages sent to the message extension functions.

Fortunately, XSLT makes it easy to combine several input XML files, as multi. xsl in Listing 6 illustrates.

However, it's a simple matter to initialize the Transformer with an XSLT style sheet to perform the second step as well.

Such an object is caught by the filter I discussed above and used to apply an XSLT transform to generate the actual output.

The document root element should reflect the result of the XSLT, not the original document.

When the final result of an XSLT pipeline is computed, the framework stores a cached version of the result for fast delivery.

When thought of this way, an XSLT stylesheet is actually a tool for defining new languages, and can be thought of as a language compiler.

XPath is a major element in the XSLT standard. Without XPath knowledge you will not be able to create XSLT documents.

This will work, but you first have to simply throw away the work that went into earlier XSLT transformations.

You could do the same with a few simple XSLT templates, adding spaces between element spans.

The designers of XSLT made the assumption that you were interested in processing most of the document, which is reasonable when publishing.

The project also contains an XSL Transformation (XSLT) WSDL 2. 0 pretty printer that provides a more human-readable form of a WSDL document.

I won't go into detail about Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) until the next "XML Matters" column.

I originally thought I would preprocess the input XML documents: Then the links would be correct by the time they reach the XSLT processor.

You could easily take advantage of them by enhancing the XSLT stylesheet that I introduced.

Automatic generation is possible using an XMI and XSLT stylesheet.

I don't know of any XSLT processor that changes prefixes when it doesn't need to, which is good.

In XSLT 1. 0, string and RTF are the only data types that you can use to store an arbitrary number of intermediate results.

Last but not least, the combination of text-markup language and XSLT works with DocBook and any other XML vocabulary.

For the time being, you have to dig into the documentation of your favorite XSLT processor and find the equivalent extension.

This restriction does not apply to the output, since XSLT can create output in a variety of formats.

XSLT does have the concept of extensions (see Resources), which provide an architected way to enhance the stylesheet language.

It's easy to validate and to translate with XSLT.

Then, you could use that XML file as the single input file to XSLT and process each file using XSLT.

A good understanding of the XSLT processor will help you be a more productive XSLT programmer.

Displays information from an XML file or stream, and optionally allows you to apply XSLT transformations.

It would be wonderful if you could do the directory processing in XSLT directly.

In an XSLT template match attribute, the options are more limited than with the select attribute.

Many of the techniques also apply to portability of a stylesheet between XSLT processors that support different extensions.

If you write XSLT stylesheets, you probably know certain coding patterns to obtain results that go beyond the plain meaning of the code.

Thus, we can get along just fine with a single XSLT file that specifies two "HTML shells" and a common set of XML-to-HTML XSLT templates.

Then, we want to be able to transform XML messages using the popular transformation language XSLT.

XSLT must surely be one of the most contorted programming languages in popular circulation.

The fact that start. xsl is itself an XSLT style sheet is of no concern to generate_html. xsl.

The process of generating XML and then transforming it to the client's preferred format using XSLT involves a number of steps.

For this override, first create a simple XSLT shell that pulls in the standard migration.

The most common case is that of applying an XSLT stylesheet to an XML file.

One new feature of XSLT v2 is the ability to provide an explicit data type for your variables and parameters.

This XSLT takes the sense information for a word, and displays the gloss (brief definition) for each sense.

This clues in the XSLT processor that the output is HTML, not the default XML format.

A localization pack manager uses the XSLT or path expressions of XPath to access the designated nodes in the localization pack XML files.

When writing XSLT style sheets, it helps to remember that the XSLT processor follows a recursive algorithm.
