UDDI

UDDI is often compared to a telephone book's white, yellow, and green pages.

In fact, it's a great idea to set up a corporate UDDI site as you publish your own Web services for availability within your company.

In UDDI terms, this SOA role is often referred to as the White Pages.

Besides being an aggregator of available Web services, UDDI makes it very easy to change the provider of a Web service behind the scenes.

We can see that this file-based discovery complements UDDI, and may be used in a crawler-like fashion by clients.

Registration of an externally validated taxonomy can be accomplished only with the approval of a UDDI Business Registry operator.

Consumers operating in the common SOA infrastructure would be able to use the standard --perhaps UDDI -- repository for all services.

You are finally ready to try UDDI-based discovery, as all the basic pieces are in place.

Note also that the W3C's definition, while mentioning service discovery, does not mention UDDI or any other specific discovery mechanism.

To a lesser extent, UDDI is also able to facilitate some patterns of unfocused discovery through browsing of the repository.

This dialog box makes it possible for you to browse your local server, the Microsoft UDDI Directory, and the Internet at large.

Process interfaces can be registered in a directory, such a UDDI.

If you want to provide services for the general public, putting them in a UDDI registry is the simplest way to do that.

While not strictly necessary, it would be helpful to verify that the business and service really were published in the UDDI Registry.

Large organizations had been using UDDI and encountered issues regarding representation of divisions or portions of their businesses.

One special UDDI registry is composed of a set of publicly accessible UDDI implementations called nodes.

It represents a proxy for the UDDI registry with which communication will take place.

An offer associated one or more Web service from a UDDI registry with a rating package used for billing.

I point to UDDI as a standard way for addressing the need for a repository or broker that will manage a directory of service interfaces.

UDDI is a standard for providing a catalog of Web services that have been made available by any number of different applications.

In Version 1 of UDDI, the only choice for these situations was to maintain separate and unrelated businesses.

Define a service interface using WSDL and register the service with a Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) repository.

Therefore, UDDI can be replaced in this infrastructure with a different type of directory service.

WebSphere Application Server ND includes additional support for JAX-RPC handlers and a complete private UDDI registry.

XQuery greatly enhances UDDI solutions as it better manages and governs the resources listed in a UDDI registry.

If the service is redeployed to a different server, the service requester can use UDDI to find the new location and cache it for future use.

The UDDI base classes form the general data structures that the UDDI registry stores.

This UDDI Services site is not configured to support the requested form of authentication.

Use of these taxonomies is internally checked by the UDDI registry; attempts to save invalid codes are rejected.

Note as well that the consumer does not use UDDI to find the request and reply queues.

The public UDDI registry allows external business partners to discover and access the web service interface of the exposed business process.

Universal Description Discovery and Integration (UDDI) is a standard for publishing and finding service descriptions within a network.

The UDDI service reference also contains extensibility elements which are discussed in the next section.

It will also be useful for dynamic selection of services at runtime, as I will discuss in a future paper on Service Choreography.

Note that service projections are not supported by the public UDDI Business Registry at the time this article was written.

For example, the service broker might be able to cache the UDDI data to improve the performance of the service provider selection process.

The Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) schema aims at providing a more business-centric perspective.

In situations where data needs to be centrally managed, a UDDI solution alone may provide the best fit.

Web services can be published to a UDDI registry, public or private, or WS-Inspection documents.

As you map a service for external consumption using the Gateway, you can publish the exported WSDL in the UDDI registry.

We begin with a simple scenario for which the existing WS technology stack (WSDL, UDDI, SOAP) is sufficient.

UDDI is an XML-based registry for businesses worldwide, which enables businesses to list themselves and their services on the Internet.

Privately, a UDDI registry is used to keep track of all the internal processes that must be exposed as web services through the Gateway.

Given this information, you are now armed with information to be able to use UDDI4J to further explore UDDI version 2.

The web service is typically published to a Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) registry.

The UDDI security model is defined by the set of registry and node policies and their implementations.

The Registration model refers to a revenue model that would apply more readily to a UDDI Gateway or Green Pages business.

It has all the methods you need to connect to a UDDI registry, execute a query, and process the results.

For further information on UDDI, see Resources at the bottom of the article.

However, the UDDI query can add significant path length to a request and, if done for every request, can degrade a client's performance.

The second would be vendor who can provide the necessary UDDI and hosting assets needed to provide a public UDDI service (green pages).

The next line lets the XML processor know that this is a SOAP envelope that wraps a UDDI-specific request inside the tag.

The next step is to configure WSRR system, using an XML-based UDDI synchronization configuration file.

File, which you will use while publishing your Web service at a UDDI registry in the fourth part of this series of articles.

During the client's service invocation, the UDDI registry is queried to obtain the access point (URL) of the service.

Most of the toolkit demos provide an option to use WS-Inspection technology or UDDI as the service discovery mechanism.

We propose this XML-based language to make uniform the UDDI search query format and dramatically reduce request times in a search.

The publishers API defines several messages to allow assertions to be managed by UDDI publishers.

This package facilitates the construction, transmission, and processing of SOAP messages (that the UDDI API supports).

The concept of business relationships is the largest single change in UDDI version 2 that affects UDDI4J.

Request classes: These classes map to the UDDI API, and are used to initiate request messages to the corresponding API.

UDDI, a language-independent protocol, is used for interacting with registries and looking for services.

UDDI builds on a network transport layer and a SOAP-based XML messaging layer.

This reference is to a business service entry in a UDDI registry.

Figure 1 shows how the service developer publishes the service definition to a UDDI registry.

A UUID key is guaranteed to be unique and never changes within a UDDI registry.

The best thing now is to play with the code and try to explore the information you can find from a UDDI registry or WSDL document.

We've also proposed a framework of an advanced UDDI search engine to conduct the searching process (see Resources).

The UDDI specification defines a standard way of registering, deregistering, and looking up services.

Please see the InstallUDDI listing for an automated setup of a UDDI registry to use the Cloudscape database.

Obviously, this is a time-consuming process and an advanced UDDI search engine can help you better handle such requests.

The details section enables configuration of the UDDI registry name and associated query information.

UDDI4J is provided as a class library to provide support to interact with a UDDI registry.

UDDI Registry is a UDDI Version 1-compliant registry for Web services intended for deployment to a private intranet environment.

The returned result is aggregated from different UDDI registries or other sources according to search criteria.

This section describes some queries that can be issued against the UDDI model of the sample application.

For a more detailed explanation of their usage, please reference the UDDI version 2. 0 Programmer's API specification.

Let's see how BE4WS can be used to efficiently search multiple UDDI registries using a single USML request with multiple queries.

The program looks through the UDDI Registry and returns the service description in the specified language to the user.

To enable automatic publishing in the UDDI registry, the registry itself must be deployed in the Bus.

Once both parties have asserted the same relationship, the UDDI registry will create the business relationship.

Then the service administrators may pick only two of them to be moved to the production UDDI.

org. uddi4j. client. UDDIProxy is the primary class used to interact with a UDDI registry.

UDDI is the piece of the puzzle that will enable businesses to find these services.

Use administrator controlled UDDI registry to manage approved services for both internal and external invocation.

First, a Web service client may query a UDDI directory service for a particular service need.

Class represent data objects used to send or receive UDDI information.

The role of the broker was typically represented by a registry following the UDDI standard.

Security will be addressed by improving UDDI data integrity through enhanced access control, identity, and authentication.

A full description of the support for authentication in the IBM WebSphere UDDI registry is outside the scope of this article.

UDDI registries are used to publish web services information for dynamic discovery.

Version 2 adds the ability for organizations to define new externally checked taxonomies, which can be offered for public use in UDDI.

Now make sure someone other than yourself knows about it by publishing the Web service to a UDDI registry.

This makes it possible in . NET to interact with a UDDI node from software or script code.

I'll start off by developing the code that will be used to publish a WSDL service interface description as a UDDI tModel.

Using WebSphere Studio to publish the service to the Speed-start Community Collection on the IBM UDDI Business Test Registry.

The public UDDI v2 business registry does not currently support service projections.

IBM offers a public UDDI test registry that you can use to become familiar with UDDI and test UDDI operations.

As you have seen, UDDI programming can be a very powerful way to share information on the Web using the UDDI registry.

IBM UDDI Explorer - Use this JSP application to browse a UDDI Business Registry to locate existing Web services for integration.

Common means for service lookup (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration, or UDDI).

The details of each UDDI artifact published have been given and some sample queries shown.

Despite the push from multiple vendors and standards bodies UDDI usage for the service match making never took off.

A location vector is required to store the location of each service obtained from UDDI.

In earlier versions, the UDDI specification mixed policy issues with UBR implementation concerns.

As UDDI continues to evolve to meet the needs of the growing Web services community, UDDI4J will continue to track those changes.

The importance of meaningful categorization in UDDI cannot be overstated.

UDDI does some hefty lifting for online contracts, and should certainly find its place soon in the distributed services arena.

First, in many cases, the WSDL describing a service is available publicly in some registry (like a UDDI).

A service provider first registers a service with a UDDI registry.

The design of UDDI enables publishing and searching of trading partners businesses and their grid services.

The UDDI Business Registry provides a place for publishing and locating Web over the Web.

UDDI provides a programming model and schema, which define the rules for communicating with the registry.

Web services are typically published to a public or private UDDI registry.

This special category distinguishes services published in the UDDI test registry as Speed Start services.

Defines how the generic UDDI data model is customized and populated.

You may then optionally publish the WSDL-defined Web service to a UDDI registry.

Despite the push from multiple vendors and standards bodies, UDDI usage for service matchmaking never took off.

Second, they must send requests to a UDDI registry and then process any responses.

Defined value types are peer-peer, parent-child, or identity and are defined in the UDDI data structures specification.

The UDDIClient session bean makes almost exclusive use of the UDDI utility API discussed in the next section.

Self-describing services channels lead to another issue, namely discovery, which synchronous Web services solve with UDDI.

Figure 2 illustrates the UDDI message transport, from the client's SOAP request over HTTP to a registry node and back.

UDDIProxy provides methods which map very closely to the API defined within the UDDI specification.

This version provides a complete implementation of the UDDI V1 application programming interface.

But the overall intent of UDDI can only be achieved if a critical mass of service providers is created.

These services are also published to the relevant UDDI directories where required.

When the UDDI registry receives one assertion, it places the relationship in a pending state.

When publishing services descriptions in a UDDI registry, it is important to follow the process defined in this series of articles.

These interoperate to share registry data and, taken together, form the UDDI Business Registry.

It should be possible to access an arbitrary standard UDDI registry using either tool.

The Workbench product combines a UDDI v3 registry with a metadata repository.

The UDDI specifications define a TModel as a reference to a standard.

There are three categories of Business Registry Information provided by the UDDI Registry for service providers.

All compliant implementations of UDDI support the UDDI specification.

A recommendation is sought, or a directory of providers is scanned for one who meets certain criteria (think UDDI).

The UDDI committee has defined some general security guidelines in the UDDI specification.

A WSDL location vector is required to store the location of WSDL documents for each service obtained from UDDI.

To store information in the UDDI test registry, a user account at the Microsoft UDDI site is required.

But due to lack of commercially driving forces, the traditional and open UDDI registry does not work in the reality.

The UBR is a good example of a root registry, which Figure 1 illustrates (adopted from the UDDI V3 specifications).

The location attribute on the serviceDescription must contain the inquiry URL for a UDDI registry, when the serviceKey is specified.

The UDDI registry is a central place to store such information and locations about grid services.

Interested users can search the UDDI registry for Web services that they might find helpful.

WSIL documents can point to other WSIL documents, a UDDI business or service entry, and WSDL documents.

A web service requester finds the web service in the UDDI registry, binds to the web service, and invokes it.

As a last step, you will need a custom discovery implementation that uses the UDDI registry.

UDDI registry interactions happen through SOAP messages.

A results vector is required to store results obtained by invoking services obtained from UDDI.

Other classes supplied with UDDI4J provide access to all of the information available in the UDDI registry.

Thus, the recent cooperation between these companies on recommended standards like UDDI and WSDL. More on that later!

The public UDDI Business Registry now has support for version 2 of the UDDI specification.

However, I still do not see much, if any, use of UDDI in real life situations.

This class library generates and parses messages sent to, and received from, a UDDI server.

This will start a local HTTP service that will communicate with the UDDI registry.

One problem I encountered with both solutions was in specifying a different UDDI service than the default one.

If you're still a bit fuzzy about the structure of the UDDI elements or the WSDL then try reading up on them.

The WSDK includes an implementation of the private UDDI registry needed for the example.

IBM provides a public (free, but requiring registration) UDDI registry.

Contains an example of the UDDI bindings for a WS-Inspection document.

UDDI4J version 1 was released to coincide with the original release of the public UDDI Business Registry (UBR).

An indication that the Bus on-ramp uses the UDDI discovery implementation.

To run the publish applications, you also need to select a UDDI registry to use.

You can use tools such as the UDDI Browser in WebSphere Studio to search for an appropriate service at application design time.

A UDDI registry is composed of one or more implementations of the UDDI specification that interoperate to share registry data.

For version 2, HP joined as a major participant in the evolution of UDDI4J and contributed much of the UDDI version 2 enhancements.

Element to specify a reference to a UDDI business entity.

The majority of today's UDDI usage is limited to referencing the service WSDL files, which are used while designing the consumer.

I use the UDDI URLs to create a proxy to the UDDI registry which I then use to query the registry to find the business service.

Some SOA technologies, like UDDI and WS-Trust, introduce a third role called a service broker.

In this fourth article, you'll see some sample Java code that will publish WSDL descriptions to UDDI programmatically.

Find and Bind - During design time, a software developer browses or searches the service registry using the UDDI Explorer.

UDDI4J provides a Java client-side interface that can be used to publish and find service descriptions in any UDDI registry.

A domainKey takes the form "uddi: " domain, where the domain is based upon an established DNS record.

In dynamic selection, the process encompasses a discovery mechanism like UDDI.

The Gateway facilitates working with UDDI registries.

The UDDI extensibility elements may appear within either the or elements.

The server also has a UDDI Server which is used for the publishing and discovery of Web services.

This class is used to send publish and find requests to a UDDI registry.

The first element in Listing 4 contains information about the private UDDI registry used in this example.

Most of the low-level coding (in WSDL, UDDI, or XML) is virtually eliminated while using the Web services tools.

When the services in the Gateway are modified, the UDDI registry is updated with the latest updates.

With BE4WS, the same programming model can be used regardless of how your lower-level UDDI clients are implemented.

In addition to other facilities, UDDI includes two APIs for publishing and discovering service information.

This says where the UDDI is, which business entity to look for, and once that is found, which business service to select.

Figure 3 illustrates how a UDDI registry is populated with data and how customers discover and use this information.

The WS-Inspection and UDDI Relationship paper contains information on how WS-Inspection relates to UDDI.

UDDI provides one-stop shopping for information on businesses and electronic services.

The UDDI4J classes include a complete representation of the UDDI data entities.

A UDDI registry is an example of this type of service registry.

UDDI registry is installed and properly configured.

UDDI is a directory for storing information about web services UDDI.

The UDDI specification is composed of several documents.

The UDDI approach is more flexible, but it is a lot more work as well.

Importing WSDL files discovered through UDDI is a two-step process.

The UDDI service key identifies one unique business service.

This code creates the object, then points the proxy to the IBM UDDI registry.

It also helps design, build, aggregate, and deploy applications as Web services based on SOAP, WSDL and UDDI technologies.

To improve the efficiency of service discovery, identification and third party classification system was introduced into UDDI 2. 0.

UDDI addresses a number of business problems.

The Explorer adds the Local UDDI Registry to the list in the Navigator pane.

Publicly available beta implementations of UDDI Version 2 were provided by multiple UDDI Business Registry operators in 2001.

The consumer selects a provider's endpoint from the list returned by UDDI.

Before you can publish your Web service to the UDDI registry you need to publish your business.

In addition to UDDI, discovery of services can be complemented using the file-based DISCO mechanism.

A uuidKey is essentially the V3 equivalent of a uuid-based key, in the form "uddi: " uuid.

Typically, the Bus, and sometimes the UDDI registry, will hang if you use the Bus to unpublish the services.

Many UDDI4J classes directly map one to one with elements defined in the UDDI schema.

Appendix J in the UDDI version 2 specification has a reference on using business relationships.

Others add proprietary extensions to UDDI.

Requesting the Gateway to publish the service to UDDI, in which case service requestors may obtain it by using UDDI lookups.

Late binding of a service's access point is one use of an UDDI registry that is common today.

These steps are supported in the UDDI explorer in one single function.

Furthermore, the UDDI registries and the WSILs are tightly associated by a WS-Inspection data tag, wsiluddi.

This section describes the different types of UDDI registries, and shows how to use the class to access them.

The Web service is published to UDDI and waiting for client requests.

The UDDI specification defines what a registry of Web services should look like.

Through this series of articles, I have described how to publish and find different types of WSDL service descriptions in a UDDI registry.

Which provides full support of Version 2 of the UDDI specification.

Optionally, a service broker, for example a Univesal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) registry, might be involved.

These are technically defined in the UDDI API schema as well as the UDDI data structure reference.

If you want to publish your private or confidential grid services, you should use a private UDDI registry.

The following new APIs related to business relationships have been defined within UDDI version 2.

The first step in your UDDI discovery code is to retrieve the TModel key from a properties file.

For example, a single Web service might be described using both a WSDL file and within a UDDI registry.

The following list of values are defined in the UDDI: types taxonomy.

The UDDI version 2 specification has been available for several months along with beta registries.

The second parameter is the authInfo string to be used when making UDDI4J calls to publish to the UDDI registry.

A user ID for the UDDI Business Test Registry.

Many of the more organized corporate environments that have a lot of internal Web service providers have UDDI registries.

Additional findQualifiers have also been added as documented in the UDDI v2 specification.

While not directly visible to UDDI clients, significant improvements were made in replication between registry operators for Version 2.

This causes the consumer to waste a lot of effort repeatedly making UDDI lookups and selecting a provider.
