All changes to any element in a ClearCase UCM project must be associated with an activity.

A component allows you to group a set of related directories and file elements together, and then tie them to a UCM project.

If you already are familiar with UCM, then you will need to forget what you know about how to set up views on the client machine.

The Work Request record could be a state-based record type with the Unified Change Management (UCM) package applied.

At a high level, testing assets in the Rational Software Quality solution do not currently support parallel development using UCM.

The child activities are UCM-enabled to capture the change-set used to address the issue.

So, if you already know a little bit about UCM, you might ask, "What makes UCM better than other change management processes? "

Of course, you can implement controls and locking to enforce your own labeling semantics, but UCM baselines solve these problems for you.

The key now is to map what you currently have to what UCM offers.

UCM was developed to make it much easier for people using ClearCase to get started with an effective use model.

Before we do that, however, we will explain the concept of a ClearCase view and UCM stream.

A UCM project also allows you to create the necessary integration streams needed to isolate work efforts.

While you may change things around a bit to make things more efficient in UCM, you most likely won't need to do anything.

You can use the information in this article to help plan a migration from VSS to ClearCase (and possibly from ClearCase to UCM).

There are certain advantages to having a proper component structure in place in UCM.

The names of these packages should match the names of the UCM baselines being deployed.

Investigate redefining the UCM componentization strategy based on the system architecture findings.

The release unit is associated with a specific UCM project.

After you decide upon the directory structure in UCM, you can proceed to export the data from VSS.

In cases like this, it is okay to adopt the UCM objects.

However, if this import is for a UCM setup, then you must complete Step 3, as well.

If you are using UCM projects to create distinct configurations for different releases, you will find yourself regularly creating new views.

The build specialist completes the build in a UCM environment.

Basically, UCM adds additional objects and workflow to the base ClearCase objects that you have already been using.

You will also need to thoroughly define what you are using today and what you want to do with UCM.

This script should be called while defining the trigger in the UCM project VOB.

When implementing UCM with test assets, we have encountered errors when attempting to check-in files that exceed 1MB in size.

With UCM, all you have to do is select "activity" to record all the new versions created for all the files.

If you are currently running the base install of ClearCase, you may at some point consider an upgrade to UCM.

UCM requires that all subsequent deliveries from this stream contain this baseline (and all its activities).

UCM gives you the ultimate ability to govern the change process for your projects.

And UCM projects hide the complexity of view setup from the user.

In addition, your config specs are generated automatically in UCM, and they may not be what you expect.

Then you can examine the different use models available through UCM.

The second key abstraction in UCM is the notion of components and component baselines.

You can create a single UCM project that includes the Utility JAR component in read-only mode.

Probably the most distinctive thing about UCM is that it is an activity-based change management model.

UCM supports all these types of activities -- and any others you choose to define yourself.

In the current scenario the assumption is that a UCM promotion model is in place before a Tivoli package can be created.

If you re a long-time Rational ClearCase user, you may recognize some pieces of the UCM process in your ClearCase customization.

Usually the parent issue is not UCM-enabled, and it flows freely among users.

Also, the clearimport command can not be used in UCM view context , so the import must be performed only in base clearcase view context.

It is standard practice in UCM to have a stream for each developer or group of developers.

During this step, we will configure the test datastore and manage the testing assets with UCM.

In addition, the UCM project hides the complexity of view creation from the user.

In the ClearCase configuration window (Figure 10), select Show All VOBs, navigate to and select the UCM project, and then click OK.

Import the label created in Step 2 as a UCM baseline for components created in the previous Step 4.

UCM does some interesting things with Views.

ClearCase UCM provides a simple but effective way to manage and govern the use of Utility JARs.

If this is the case, you can move directly to the UCM model with no mapping from your current model.

The second script can be used only in UCM environments.
