On Sept. 23, Goldman banker Byron Trott, who had long worked closely with Mr. Buffett, called to ask what it would take to do a deal.

"You get Byron, you get Goldman, " one person said, noting that Mr Trott had already secured some advisory assignments.

Ms Trott is 29 but appears even younger; she is currently practising how to speak clearly with new braces in her mouth.

These days, however, the Trotts are most excited about their newest product, Vox, which was launched last month.

For if a blogging service can have a personality, then Vox has Ms Trott's.

Mr. Trott is from Union, Mo. , and he shares Midwestern roots with Mr. Buffett, who is based in Omaha, Neb.

Mr. Trott, 50 years old, intends to name the firm BDT Capital Partners, using his own initials.
