As you may remember, my previous article demonstrated the concept of using a stylesheet to compile new features into another stylesheet.

In the case of a Java applet, a CSS-rendering library separate from Mozilla's library is required if stylesheet support is to be available.

If the stylesheet used modes, or invoked templates by name, we might not be able to tell which of several templates was actually executed.

By contrast, how much time is available to rewrite stylesheet modules?

For instance, suppose you're debugging a stylesheet that seems to have trouble when a paragraph contains an inline image.

The only difference between the skin group used for Internet Explorer and Mozilla is the stylesheet.

Trying to start the transformation with a stylesheet parameter to determine which template gets called first.

The second stylesheet translates these tags into a core set of PostScript functions necessary to render a page of flowing text.

If you want to try all this out, the bundled files provide a simple XML file, XSL stylesheet, and source code (see Download).

This includes markup conversions, annotations, stylesheet applications, and any other conversion that affects an individual portlet.

One of the most effective ways to query such a database is to write an XSLT stylesheet that formats the results.

This allows a stylesheet to be applicable to a wide class of documents that have similar source tree structures.

By simply changing the stylesheet, you can change the overall look of your diagram to make it more suitable for a different context.

XSLT normally assumes that whitespace in a stylesheet isn't meaningful, with a few specific exceptions.

The concept of cascade becomes important when multiple stylesheet are specified for an HTML document.

Applying this to the Web space, an HTML file represents data; a CSS stylesheet represents styling of a particularly structured set of data.

An XPath statement in an XQuery or XSLT stylesheet might test for one of the predefined elements and also display the known color.

The mechanism for reusing data is called an Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformation (XSLT) , or simply, a transform .

So you might have a page called homepage. html with a CSS stylesheet named homepage. css, or even default. css.

Why not move it into its own stylesheet and structure it in a way that is flexible enough to be used on multiple sites?

As shown in Listing 4, at the top of our base stylesheet (base. css) we defined the styles, including the font size.

A stylesheet is a well formed XML document used to present the XML source document in various formats of your choosing.

These options range from static XML files to be processed to dynamic URLs to the stylesheet used to transform the XML.

With the appropriate stylesheet, it does not take long to reverse-engineer them into a model.

In the sample application, you took an unwieldy stylesheet and refactored it into a much smaller and more maintainable piece of code.

The conversion can be carried out with an XSL stylesheet or script.

When thought of this way, an XSLT stylesheet is actually a tool for defining new languages, and can be thought of as a language compiler.

Obviously, you could write a stylesheet that scanned through the traced output, found the comments, and sorted and counted them.

In fact, imagine trying to write even the simplest XML transformation without ever typing select in your stylesheet.

I include a second instance of the same Ant script, this time formatted with a stylesheet which generates frames.

I won't go into detail about Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) until the next "XML Matters" column.

You could easily take advantage of them by enhancing the XSLT stylesheet that I introduced.

Each folder contains a stylesheet that defines the color scheme and a set of images to match the color scheme.

Automatic generation is possible using an XMI and XSLT stylesheet.

With this in mind, let's now put together a quick XSL stylesheet, to convert the XML output of Listing 2 into a simple HTML page.

Stefan might simply rewrite his stylesheet so it generates comments at the start and end of each template's execution.

Normal Web pages have their style removed from the page and placed in an external file or section of the code, in a stylesheet.

When a stylesheet processor analyses a stylesheet for static errors, it will look for syntaxes that it does not understand.

The Announcement style (content-title) as shown in figure 18 is not accessible through the stylesheet JSPS.

The final part of this lesson is manipulating the CSS on a page dynamically without adjusting the stylesheet or reloading the page.

stylesheet. css: The stylesheet file used for the screens.

This is always a good idea because otherwise you would see nothing and have no idea whether the stylesheet did anything.

The most basic thing you can do with Firefox and XML is to load an XML file in an unknown vocabulary with no associated stylesheet.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS): CSS is a stylesheet language used to describe the presentation of HTML documents.

As you can see, this code declares namespace prefixes env and p on the root element xsl: stylesheet.

XSLT does have the concept of extensions (see Resources), which provide an architected way to enhance the stylesheet language.

But of course the stylesheet is only half of the process; the other half is the document being styled.

This is the conventional stylesheet used to render RDDL, although nothing requires you to use it.

Provide an appropriate name for the stylesheet resource in the Name property.

The generated output references a CSS stylesheet, mostly as a demonstration of this pattern.

The stylesheet would be used to apply presentation styles to different data elements.

GRRDL defines a means of associating an XSLT stylesheet with a page or namespace.

Many of the techniques also apply to portability of a stylesheet between XSLT processors that support different extensions.

Stylesheet parameters cannot be designated as tunnel parameters, but they are available globally anyway.

Most of this is the same old presentation you've always been doing: a CSS stylesheet with lots of selectors, rules, and formatting.

At the top of the page, Listing 4 includes the jQuery library and a CSS stylesheet to make the output pretty.

Heavily using global variables or template parameters as communication vehicles within the stylesheet.

A StyleSheet control can contain any number of style objects, or more specialized style objects that inherit from the Style class.

Since the incoming XML data just contains a flat list of elements, you'll group them by address in the stylesheet.

Using more compact selectors would help, and would enhance the readability of your stylesheet.

In this scenario, in fact, the stylesheet aims merely to set a variable, not to transform the message's content.

This ensures that your stylesheet works with any XML in a given format, rather than one specific instance document.

If the variable contains a value, that value is used in a link element in the HTML to link to the stylesheet that you specify.

The problem remains, however, that every stylesheet has its own convention for expressing this information.

The Assembly Editor does not require the user to create an XSLT stylesheet, providing a more intuitive way to describe the transformation.

In many respects, you can think of xsl: apply-templates as a recursive call into the stylesheet itself!

And with the schema and CSS stylesheet currently available, you can try it and think about what advantages it might bring to your operation.

Provides support for Extensible Stylesheet Transformation (XSLT) transforms.

Therefore, you may find more than one valid mapping between UML and XML. You have to tell the stylesheet which one to adopt.

You can see that the stylesheet assumes you'll process the entire document.

In a stylesheet, this feature is controlled by a version attribute, which can appear on any element.

WeatherTransform. Xslt is an Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformation (XSLT).

The color property allows webmasters to define the color of an element in a CSS stylesheet.

Before invoking the stylesheet transformation, the compute node Standardise slightly alters the captured WSDL document.

To illustrate the flexibility of the stylesheet, take out some of the results in the XML file and run the transform.

You might copy the nodes in sorted order into a result tree fragment, but then your stylesheet must rely on the node-set extension function.

If you're using another processor, of course, check its documentation for the details of how it accepts stylesheet parameters.

Keep this in mind when you re working on your next stylesheet and you may find that it changes how you code .

The stylesheet attempts to guess the file separator for your system by querying.

The following example shows how you can add Style properties to a StyleSheet control during the Page_Load event.

Evolved from the early Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) standard.

Two of the most popular are eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT), and XML Path Language (XPath).

Administrator can control the injected content - use inline styles , or use stylesheet styles to control presentation .

Despite this, the stylesheet generates the correct bracket, as you can see in Figure 3.

Now all I have to do is put the pseudo-xpath-to-current-node template someplace where the annotated stylesheet can find it.

The ideal solution is to test which processor you re using in the stylesheet and branch to the appropriate code section.

The stylesheet processing instruction provides basic instructions for displaying the XML.

Listing 1 is an RSS document associated to a stylesheet (an excerpt from my podcast's feed).

The most common case is that of applying an XSLT stylesheet to an XML file.

In Part 2 of this article, I ll show you how to turn this analysis into an actual XSLT stylesheet for preparing SOAP requests.

If the result is false, then the processor excludes the element and its descendants in the stylesheet.

The code (application that shows you this page), content (the XML document) and presentation (style sheets) are different.

TG (Trace Generation) produces a message each time a stylesheet generates (writes) content to the output document.

The stylesheet needs to be modified to point to the new images in the new directory.

Try commenting them out in your stylesheet and see what happens.

This step is different from the parsing model, although it still aligns with assigning a stylesheet in the XML transformations model.

Take care to select none from the output list box to avoid the stylesheet altering the content of the data.

To create the function1. js file, I made only minor modifications to the stylesheet, as shown in Listing 8.

A front-end process (also an Ant script) runs the stylesheet to transform the input documents into the Ant build file.

The stylesheet to be used is defined through the element in the initialization file.

Rendering of XML documents is typically done with an XSLT stylesheet.

Finally, view support allows an XML application to examine a document in both original and stylesheet rendered forms.

Other documents that the stylesheet loads are called secondary sources.

Such declarations are then inherited by all elements in the stylesheet so you can use them in any embedded XPath expression.

How could stylesheet developers give me that information?

I'll use an identical copy of tracexsl4. xsl as the sample stylesheet to be traced.

To make changes to the XML files, because both the data file and the stylesheet are pure XML, use your favorite XML or text editor.

The other iPhone-specific line in this partial layout file is the CSS stylesheet tag, which specifies a new iPhone-specific CSS file.

The stylesheet controls the presentation of the data and follows the standard format as described in the W3C document (see Resources).

That would work, but the stylesheet would be difficult to maintain.

To refactor the code, start moving the style information to a CSS stylesheet.

If you need a shorter, simpler format, you can transform it with an XSLT stylesheet.

Listing 9 is a simple CSS stylesheet that changes the font for the labels and aligns the form fields more neatly.

We already have one stylesheet that deals with the styling of the photo layout, members. css.

BASE_XSLT is a special document definition which tells 4SS to optimize this document as an XSLT stylesheet.

This directory listing contains the URLs of the test files and will be the input to the XSL stylesheet.

Listing 3 shows the result of passing the sample XML through this stylesheet.

We won't complete the configuration of the stylesheet until the wiring has been completed.

generalstore. css - Stylesheet used to format HTML elements by both JSP pages.

The advantage here is that this interim stylesheet is completely generic.

You can perform Extensible Stylesheet Language for Transformations (XSLT) transformations using the XslCompiledTransform class.

Generally, the first step to designing a stylesheet in either XSLT or sXBL is to write a variation of the document you want to create.

Porting a stylesheet to a new processor is typically as simple as copying the file.

The last step is actually to apply the XSLT stylesheet to the XML data.

Select this option to specify a separate stylesheet for the HTML page. You can select or type on in the field below.

The user can then replace the default stylesheet with his respective stylesheets.

If the template in the including stylesheet follows the included template, the former is invoked.

Here the XSLT stylesheet implicitly defines a new language for specifying Java class definitions.

A script-specific stylesheet is a great option if your script required a lot of styles to enable its interactivity.

A processing instruction contains a target (xml-stylesheet in the above example), followed by data.

Listing 17 identifies the purpose of this stylesheet by setting the media attribute value to print.

Automatically add behavior to each template element -- that sounds like something a stylesheet could do!

JMeter also provides a less detailed XSL stylesheet file that summarizes the load tests' results.

The processing instruction (starting with xml-stylesheet) on the first line of Listing 1 indicates which XSLT stylesheet to use.

The application makes better use of stylesheets and generates a more sophisticated stylesheet.

Listing 2 shows the first part of the main XSL stylesheet for the generator project.

Listing 2 is another stylesheet excerpt that demonstrates the keep properties in a blind table with FOP.

I may also prepare a stylesheet that implements the reverse procedure: from XML schema to XMI.

As it stands, tracing would break my trace stylesheet!

We will use the extension function rdf. complete in our stylesheet to gather information about all of the software in the system.

As you might expect, you need an XSLT 2. 0 processor to use this stylesheet.

This stylesheet will keep information of this SAML1. 1 information in a cache for future traffic.

The easiest way to get Firefox to render arbitrary XML in a non-generic way is to use a stylesheet.

In another type of attack, the attacker might modify the stylesheet to hide information from users.

To control the byte order mark (BOM) in the stylesheet, you can now use the byte-order-mark Serialization parameter.

These transformations apply the series of rules specified in the stylesheet to the XML data.

Stylesheets load in parallel, but if you have a stylesheet followed by an inline script, parallel downloads are broken.

Therefore, you need to define an XSLT stylesheet transforming incoming SOAP packages into XACML requests.

Figure 2 shows the updated XUL window with a stylesheet, loaded into Firefox.

Alternatively, you can choose an existing stylesheet from your workspace.

When using the stylesheet transform node, the stylesheet is sensitive to the layout of XML comments between elements in the WSDL.

The stylesheet will be automatically deployed to the broker inside the broker archive file.

Because jCarousel can be configured to show either a horizontal or a vertical image carousel, its stylesheet contains rules for both types.

In Design view, right-click the StyleSheet control, click Show Smart Tag, and then click Edit Styles.

The first is the simplest. The stylesheet is shown in Listing 3.

Consider the more realistic case, where the h1 and h2 statements are hundreds of lines apart in a massive CSS stylesheet.

The "copy all" stylesheet has only one template, which I copied directly from the XSLT recommendation.

XSLTC works by compiling a stylesheet into Java byte code, called a translet. The translet is later used to perform XSL transformations.

The code for each row and column is repeated throughout the stylesheet.

Another alternative is to use an XSLT stylesheet and convert the information on the fly into HTML.

You can view the complete stylesheet for this transformation.

The first one is applying the Schematron XSL stylesheet to the incoming request XML document.

To write a stylesheet that matches elements from XMI and transforms them into XML schema elements is conceptually simple enough.

In this field you can enter an URL for your stylesheet.

So make sure you hone your XSLT skills before you tackle this project (or just rip off my stylesheet).

You can now start modifying the new stylesheet and properties files to personalize the site.

It is sufficient to duplicate namespace declarations from the source document in the stylesheet.

A stylesheet contains a set of template rules.

The hardest work (getting the definitions right) has been done by the stylesheet.

This gives you a basic view of the stylesheet's flow of execution.

This tells the browser to use your stylesheet when displaying the document.

To demonstrate his point, he codes a special stylesheet that makes some aspects of the processing more visible.

You can use the rc: StyleSheet URL access parameter to specify a custom style sheet on the report URL.

Third, Mozilla's excellent CSS2 stylesheet support, originally intended for XHTML, also applies to XUL.

A stylesheet can contain several variables of the same name.

The stylesheet uses for-each statements to iterate over groups of elements.

Define your custom stylesheet by copying an existing style folder.

To solve this problem, you can load the actual feed, analyze it, and use the information to set the proper stylesheet.

Repeat the above steps for all references to stylesheet classes in all aggregator JSPs.

A related example is that of XSLT, where a stylesheet is used to transform XML into some other text format, such as HTML.

The reverse problem exists when an XSL stylesheet needs to generate qnames in WSDL document attributes.

By contrast, I put this stylesheet together in about fifteen minutes.

XSL, CSS, and other existing stylesheet languages are designed to render text, not graphics.

The stylesheet creates three sequences of strings.

If you forgot to write expressions relative to the current node, you can easily end up with the wrong stylesheet, as in Listing 7.

Listing 4 shows the stylesheet entry that defines the style of the text in the sortable column.

The required stylesheets are hauled in using the ? xml-stylesheet? declarations from the top of Listing 1.

Set configuration options on or around that parser or transformer (validation, namespace-awareness, stylesheet to use, and so on).

Select the stylesheet resource created in step 7 for the Style Resources property.

I'll try that again, but this time set the tracegroups parameter to "stylesheet, template" .

If you are familiar with XSLT, you can probably write a similar stylesheet in minutes. . .

The form you've generated doesn't reference a stylesheet, nor does it contain much in the way of formatting.

A good understanding of this is essential to improving your stylesheet coding.

To test the regular expression, the stylesheet simply copies its input unmodified.

The first one is a typical XSLT stylesheet; the second is a rewriting that exposes the depth-first walk.

In addition, the font-family attribute is also used in the stylesheet to generate PDF from XSL-FO.

You can even invoke the stylesheet processor from an Ant task (See the Ant style task description in Resources).

First, the stylesheet puts the words CDATA-START and CDATA-END in the resulting XML document.

If this really bothers you, feel free to improve this stylesheet!

tracexsl1. xsl -- The new stylesheet for tracing stylesheets.

A common pattern for this type of usage is the transformation of XML messages using a stylesheet that is dynamically computed.

On the other hand, an XSLT processor is not allowed to recognize extension points in any comment or text node of the stylesheet.

When you provide a CSS stylesheet, a user can override your style choices.

Next, you need to make your custom stylesheet available on the custom palette.

The final stylesheet is roughly 70% smaller than the (admittedly clumsy) original version.

The second line is key, the stylesheet processing instruction (PI).

Like the declaration, xml-stylesheet has a special status because it is defined by the W3C.
