Just a year year ago, a Pakistani-born U. S. citizen - Faisal Shahzad - tried to set off a car bomb in New York's Times Square.

It was also unclear whether Mr. Shahzad was affiliated with the Pakistan Taliban or any other Pakistan-based jihadi group.

Court documents said Mr. Shahzad had admitted trying to detonate the car bomb in Times Square.

According to the criminal complaint, Mr. Shahzad said he recently received bomb-making training in the Waziristan, Pakistan.

Prosecutors had introduced a dramatic video of an FBI-staged explosion they said demonstrated how deadly Shahzad's bomb could have been.

On Tuesday, U. S. Magistrate Judge James C. Francis IV asked if Mr. Shahzad had waived his right to a speedy court appearance.

Shahzad apparently left a trail of evidence in what was described as an amateur operation.

According to the reports, Shahzad's car was found in the heart of Times Square loaded with gasoline, propane, fireworks and fertilizer.
