Sarai

Pharaoh said he would never have taken Sarai into his palace if he had known she was Abram's wife.

And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.

Let's look at the two reasons he gives as he tells Sarai to pretend to be his sister and not his wife.

And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.

It appears Sarai's thoughts walked as far as her faith would carry her until she stood looking at the mountains of her fear.

But the Lord struck Pharaoh and his household with grave diseases on account of Abram's wife Sarai.

He redeems the misery of the moment, but Sarai's plan will have bitter consequences.

Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

And he changed Sarai's name to Sarah, saying she would be the mother of nations and among her off-spring would be kings (Genesis 17 NIV).

When King Pharaoh saw Sarai, he liked what he saw. And as the "brother" of Sarai, Abram received preferential treatment from the Egyptians.

Did Abram believe he and Sarai were somehow outside God's protection when they entered the land of Egypt?

Sarai is impatient, and she has a plan. If Abram will treat her maidservant as a wife, Sarai believes she can build a family through Hagar.

Sarai is the first of a long line of barren women who were desperate for children.

Now Sarai was barren; she had no children.

And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

So Abram, Lot, and Sarai traveled to the land of Canaan and settled near a city called Shechem (Sichem, 12: 6).

Afraid to trust God completely, Abram had a conversation of conspiracy with Sarai, and they hatched a plan.

Sarai believed her assumptions more than she believed God's promise.

If we then asked Sarai, "Will God? " her honest answer may have been "No. "

At times like that, we need to remember Sarai's impatience and Abram's compliance.

But the Lord inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram's wife Sarai.

And when he was about to enter into Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, I know indeed that you are a beautiful woman to look at;

Abram's wife Sarai had borne him no children.

Second, Abram is fearful. He doesn't want to become Sarai's suddenly deceased husband.

He said, Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, where did you come from? Where are you going?

If we could ask Sarai, "Can God? " she most likely would answer "Yes. "

And the Lord sent great troubles on Pharaoh's house because of Sarai, Abram's wife.

Gen 12: 17 And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife.

And he said, Hagar, Sarai's servant, where have you come from and where are you going?

Poor Pharaoh couldn't resist the "very fair" Sarai, and he takes her into his harem. 12: 15
