"About two-thirds of the patients . . . had at least one underlying condition that put them at risk, " Schuchat said.

"We would hate to see this novel strain essentially become resist through that mechanism, " Schuchat said.

"I think right now it is really premature to say the disease is different in Mexico from here, " Schuchat said.

Schuchat said the government had learned some lessons about how to manage expectations.

Pregnant women account for about 6% of H1N1 cases, compared with just 1% of the general population, according to Dr. Schuchat.

Only 25 percent of high-risk adults under age 65 have gotten a pneumonia vaccination, Schuchat said at a news briefing Wednesday.

Some are still in the hospital with very severe illness, Schuchat said.
