PaaS or IaaS tends to be a decision of cost, service level, or congruence with your requierments.

When you think of Plaform-as-a-Service (PaaS), one of the first companies that springs to mind is probably Salesforce.

This pattern provides a PaaS solution to which an application packaged as an EAR or a WAR can be deployed.

An advantage of a Platform-as-a-Service for developers and architects is the ability to directly develop applications for the cloud.

I'd like to turn your attention to the cross-concept matrix shown in Part 1 to use as a reference as the series continues to analyze PaaS.

Ideally, a PaaS should support any frameworks that are based on the language of choice for that platform.

This layer differs from PaaS in that the virtual hardware is provided without a software stack.

That said, it is logical to assume that the two main ingredients of PaaS are the computing platform and the solution stack.

Most PaaS providers limit the number of applications you can build based on the plan or package you signed up for.

If you can get your requirements met with the limited knobs available in a PaaS offering, it could be worth it.

PaaS is similar to IaaS but includes operating systems and required services that focus on a particular application.

Often these require PaaS developers and their users to purchase subscriptions to the co-resident SaaS application.
