ODR

The ODRs will route the incoming HTTP requests in an "application scoped" fashion to any target server capable of servicing the request.

The last step required to be able to route requests to the WebSphere sMash application via the ODR is to define a routing policy on the ODR.

For the purposes of this example, let's assume the ODR is the only application server process available on this particular node.

This indicates that this policy should be enacted on any requests that come to this ODR and meet the URI pattern specified.

One of these is the "on demand router" (ODR), which acts as an intelligent proxy that helps to achieve performance goals.

Because of that, the ODR enforces a better utilization of your hardware resources and protects your server from too much of a workload.

This eliminates the need for a plugin-xml. cfg file, since the communication between the deployment manager and the ODR is direct.

Presently, the generated plug-in routing file contains only the ODRs that are up and running at the time of generation.

The ODR can work with other parts of the system to achieve dynamic placement within a dynamic cluster.

Though technically possible, do not create topologies where ODRs route traffic across multiple WebSphere Application Server cells.

However, this would require all secondary requests to be routed through the ODR as shown in Figure 5.

A typical ODR cluster would contain at least two members, each of which should reside in a separate machine.

As you can see, the capabilities of the ODR provide numerous options to a topology designer.

Like the classic proxy server, an ODR can also be used to route traffic to super clusters.

For a moment, assume that you see the value of adding the ODR into your topology.

In any production system, we recommend you have at least two ODRs so that there will not be a single point of failure.

This server enables the client to access JMX notifications generated by the application servers, node agents, and ODRs within the cell.

If there is a match, then the ODR attempts to locate the web module to which the request should be routed.

Beyond that, the number of ODRs needed will be determined by the amount of load you expect the network to experience.

Also, some of the tasks the ODR initiates to resolve potential error conditions make good candidates for monitoring alerts.

Scripts can be configured to automatically copy the ODR generated plug-in file to the appropriate location on the Web server machine.

The next question is: Should application and administrative traffic share ODRs?

Beyond system metrics, certain states of the application servers and the ODR itself are of interest to us.

The following wsadmin script can be used to list out the ODR Routing rules for the specified ODR.

On principles of operational independence of data centers, HTTP plug-ins should not be routing to foreign ODRs.

Another reason for routing to foreign ODRs might be session affinity.

The technique requires CGBS configuration if the ODRs and clusters (application deployment targets) are located in different core groups.

Once both applications are running, start the ODR instance where the generic server cluster routing policy was configured.

In a highly available deployment manager setup, administrative traffic should also flow through an ODR.

If no ODR routing rule is matched, the default behavior is to consider all web modules which match the request's URI to handle the request.

A rule of thumb is that you can begin with the number of HTTP servers that you currently have routing to your application servers.

The ODR enables priority-based workflow management that enables the enforcement of service level policies for applications.

In the example described in Real life scenario, we have one access point and two peer access points from the ODR cell's point of view.

After the prioritization has taken place, the ODR dynamically routes the requests to the available target application servers.

Yet, studies of online dispute resolution (ODR) show, on the whole, poor uptake of ODR by the public.

To determine which application should serve the request, first confirm if there are ODR routing rules that match the incoming request.

These concepts are key to understanding how the WebSphere XD ODR operates.

Take a look at the example output above from when the ODR was started.

In other words, the ARFM statistics of the co-located application server are distorted by ODR workload.

In that case the ODR will not route new requests to the servers that are in maintenance mode.

The core component for the multi-cell routing scenario is the ODR, which is considered as an intelligent router.

The client hits the ODR, which routes the request to an application server hosting the Web application.

By default, each proxy server (or ODR) is set up with an independent object cache instance.

A second major decision is to decide what caching options you will enable on the ODRs.

If the ODR was in the DMZ, that would result in numerous openings in the inner firewall.

The number depends on the inflowing workload and the information of the ODR in front of the WebSphere cell.

The general rule to remember is that the ODR tries to match the most specific pattern.

As you look at Figure 2, you may wonder why we placed a proxy server in front of the ODR servers.

The odr-10 gene, which makes the odor receptor protein that detects diacetyl, is active in neurons that guide the worm toward a scent.

Bridge all of the core groups containing the clusters and the core group containing the ODRs.

The ODR will obtain routing information dynamically.

Hence, the ODR tiers only route requests to application servers in their own data center.

Understanding how to read the target. xml file can decrease time to resolution when determining why routing failures occur in the ODR.

Chapter Two provides the survey of ODR. It parses advantages and basic forms of ODR.

For security reasons, an ODR is not typically placed in the DMZ.

Traffic control is provided by the On Demand Router (ODR).

If the queue on the ODR is full, then 503 responses are returned.

Additionally, the ODR protects the backend, such as overload protection.

This directive tells the ODR how to handle the request once received.
