If the client has no DNS entry, this option should specify the name you want to be contained in the local host file of the LPAR.

Cons: Unfortunately, with a completely clean installation, making the new LPAR look like the old server can be time-consuming.

Just as before, if I need to reboot the LPAR at this point, I can rest assured that I can boot from either disk.

A piece of System z hardware might have several different processors, and you can allocate these processors to LPARs on the system.

So, when the hypervisor polling cycle probed the LPAR, it asked, "How much CPU did you need? "

The period between the suspension and resumption of the LPAR lasts just a few seconds.

Whoever is responsible for your storage subsystem should be able to present the disks to the new LPAR.

Modify the example as necessary, then use it to power on an LPAR and attempt to network-boot it from a server in the network.

Under LPAR Search, simply enter the name of the LPAR, click search and you will be presented with a link to that systems data.

A subset of a single System p machine can be organized as an LPAR that contains hardware resources and operates as an independent system.

During my tests, I did not notice any disruption to the LPAR as a result of this operation.

Every LPAR requires its own operating system image and a certain number of physical resources.

Each of these benchmarks had its own LPAR and virtualization within the same physical hardware.

As a side effect, this means every LPAR on a managed system will always be able to use its entitled capacity at any point in time.

Therefore, to provide mirroring of the LPAR rootvgs, you must have at least two populated storage controllers on your system.

When you have your data ready to move, remove the volume group and its physical volumes from the source LPAR.

Contact the application team that uses the LPAR to see if any new processes or loads have been added.

It is impossible, in an article of this length, to discuss all the options available to you in configuring an LPAR system.

Everything is automated in such a way that you can use a single command at the HMC to install the new LPAR.

Just as the HMC can be used to activate an existing LPAR, it can also be used to install an operating system on a new LPAR.

The -f flag displays the identification number of a partition in an LPAR configuration.

Logical partitions (LPARs) allow you to run multiple operating system instances on the same system without interference.

In the event of an LPAR problem (or a scheduled system outage, for that matter), all underlying WPARs will also be affected.

But the latent risk was that the physical removal could panic the larger server and crash all of the LPARs on it.

At this point, the target system instructs the Hypervisor on the source system to suspend the LPAR.

If the LPAR you are booting has physical Ethernet adapters assigned to it, you do not need this argument.

If the working set of both LPARs remains less than or equal to the pool size, then the there is no over-commit.

The SAP team also did not notice any disruption to their SAP GUI client sessions or jobs running on the LPAR.

The host name of the LPAR that hosts the database is configured in WebSphere and is contained as a binary entry in the transaction logs.

When you boot the server (or activate the LPAR), a variety of LED codes will flash as the system runs its basic hardware checks.

Modify the example as necessary, then use it with an lpar_netboot command to kick off an automated installation of the operating system.

Memory savings can be used to add more LPARs or additional workloads to the system to do more work.

Each LPAR in a partitioned IBM System p has its own image, while containers and zones each have the same base operating system.

If you perform an ifconfig command, you will see that the virtual adapter individual VLAN mapped to the LPAR.

A configured WPAR is a part of an LPAR and reduces the amount of AIX images that need to be maintained.

You can install this script on your HMC server to automate the installation of a new LPAR using the techniques described in this article.

You should be aware that LPARs by themselves do not provide a significant increase in a system's availability.

This capacity is guaranteed to be available to its LPAR within one dispatch cycle (10ms).

mkvdev: This command manages the virtual devices that you create and serve up to the VIO client LPARs.

After the services are active (running), the partition will be able to receive dynamic LPAR commands from the HMC.

At an agreed time, I reboot the LPAR and confirm that the system is now running AIX 6. 1.

Therefore, it is recommended to use at least two VIO Servers to host storage and network resources to the LPARs.

When enabled, the OS compresses LPAR memory and leaves the remainder of the memory in an uncompressed state.

Once both my VIOS were activated and I'd verified the virtual adapter mappings and health checks, I started an AIX LPAR.

On the day of the upgrade, I shut down all the LPARs and handed the system over to the IBM CE.

Increasing resources -- Adding more CPUs or, in a virtualized environment, re-configuration of your logical partitions (LPARs).

With logical partitioning (LPAR), IBM servers that feature the POWER processor can support multiple system requirements in a single machine.

The partition profile is a definition of physical and virtual resources associated with an LPAR, and an LPAR can have one or more profiles.

It also allows you to balance workloads and resources by allowing you to move LPARs to different physical servers.

The objective of the test was to find the optimal configuration for performance on a single LPAR.

A logical partition, or LPAR, was built on this system with an initial configuration of four processors and 48 GB of memory.

Optionally validate the state of the InfiniBand on each LPAR by running the ibstat -v command from a user with root privileges.

If the processing units are not available on the system, then the LPAR will not start up.

To others familiar with LPAR technologies, a "node" is an instance of an OS, and several LPARs can reside on a single physical frame.

During the active migration of the LPAR, state information is transferred from the source to the target system.

With Dynamic LPAR, resources can be dynamically added and removed without requiring a partition reboot.

Linux distributions on both iSeries and pSeries systems run in a logically partitioned environment (LPAR).

Within a managed system is the capability of dividing the physical resources into groups called Logical Partitions or LPAR's.

The last challenges to completing the LPAR migration are to get all the other devices set up properly.

Shared CPU usage data is shown for the LPAR over the last day, week and year.

I booted up the LPAR, and all appeared well, until the applications were started.

After that, your cloud environment has a new LPAR that is ready to accept the processes you want to load on it.

In addition, you will not be able to remove processing units from the LPAR below this amount.

During the LPAR suspension, the source LPAR continues to send partition state information to the target server.

Complete the following steps to set up the InfiniBand network interface on each LPAR.

Identify one of the LPARs as the installation-initiating host (IIH).

The next step was to migrate my existing dedicated-memory LPARs to shared-memory LPARs.

Then if you open a console connection to the LPAR from the HMC, you see the first screen of the installation program.

Most of the time required for the migration was for the copying of the LPAR's memory from the source to the target.

LPARs can be temporarily moved to different physical servers during the maintenance window.

The shared memory pool would be configured with 12GB of physical memory, with a total of 14GB of logical memory allocated to the LPARs.

However, they believe the memory is real, so the change is transparent to the system.

Ensuring the target system has sufficient memory and processor resources to meet the LPAR's current entitlements.

You can obtain the MAC address by using another form of the lpar_netboot command.

This has the advantage of reserving this IP address for this LPAR on every boot of the operating system.

This factor is treated as a multiple of the actual logical memory size of the LPAR.

In addition to these workloads, several other, smaller LPARs were running on this system as well.

The data LUNs had already been assigned to the VIOS and mapped and configured on the client LPAR.

You define virtual Ethernet and disk devices on the VIO Server and then make them available to the other LPARs on the system.

The next step is to assign the storage to the target LPAR.

So in my AMS environment, I decided that I'd add a little extra logical memory to each LPAR, to cater for peaks in demand.

The IVM automatically created a VIOS paging device for each LPAR as part of the migration to shared memory.

With the use of VIO LPARs, you could host 15 LPARs with a much smaller number of Ethernet and disk controllers.

My aim was to migrate these existing LPARs from dedicated to shared memory and monitor their performance.

In the following example, you can observe that an LPAR requires additional memory due to an increase in workload.

One operating system type and one virtual server type (or server type if you're not running on LPAR), the status should be OK.

This reduces the processing overhead on the LPAR and minimizes the performance impact to the running applications.

You also learned how to improve recoverability by using NIM on an LPAR to house recovery images for your LPARs, VIO Servers, and HMCs.

Each application can is now executed within one WPAR, rather than creating separate LPARs.

This also makes the volume group active and updates the new LPAR with details of file systems associated with the logical volumes.

The working set of both LPARs is now larger than the shared memory pool size.

Check the service and productivity tools Web site for additional requirements for future dynamic LPAR tools support.

But given the workload of each LPAR, it should be fine in most situations.

Here, you remove the physical disks from the original server, insert them into the new hardware, and assign them to the LPAR.

Only a little over 160MB of data exists for around 100 LPARs with a sample rate of one hour.

I also ensure that we update the VIOS and LPAR partition profile (on the HMC) with these newly created virtual adapters.

This may prevent it from accessing some of the disks it could access in the old LPAR.

NPIV with a VIOS, utilizes virtual FC devices to present disk (and tape) natively to the client LPARs.

With a p5 system that has multiple LPARs, this process becomes a little more cumbersome if you order a tape drive.

and provide the host name of the source LPAR environment as value of Host name of machine field (for instance, was_src_lpar).

When the file system contains all the data it requires, you can export the volume group from the source LPAR and import it on the target.

WPARs are a subset of an LPAR, but they are still part of the single operating system image.

The LPAR is configured with two Domino partitions that also run as a Domino server cluster.

Second, save a copy of disk information, especially if the disks will be moved directly from the original server to the new LPAR.

Similar to Solaris, you can have applications running in the global environment (in an LPAR that has WPARs) that are not hosted by WPARs.

The HCA is logically partitioned using the POWER hypervisor, and each LPAR is assigned a portion of the HCA bandwidth and resources.

Use the sample as a model and add additional host definitions for each LPAR you want to configure.

Remarkably, it requires very little disk space, depending on the sample rate, the number of managed systems and LPARs.

Dynamic LPAR event scripts can use standard hotplug event script programming techniques.

It also discussed the installation, configuration, and administration of WPARs and how they relate to the global (LPAR) environment.

This enables WPAR-hosted applications executing on one LPAR to be temporarily moved to another without any downtime.

Nor could we test that the new hardware was functioning OK, well in advance, before activating the LPARs and running production workload.

Follow the steps in the Prepare the source LPAR environment section to create the destination NIM installation.

There were rare occasions where the LPARs working set would grow and be slightly larger than the size of the pool.

The percentage against the target expanded memory size, if the LPAR has a memory deficit.

On the other hand, you might have several small LPARs that do not require a large amount of data throughput.

SAN boot technology provides extremely rapid build and boot times for LPARs, especially when done with Network Installation Manager (NIM).

Obtaining a list of node names on a managed system becomes as easy as generating a list of LPAR's from the HMC.

The Resources section of this article contains a link to complete details on using the lpar_netboot command.

On an existing AIX LPAR, create a CD-ROM file system if you don't have one (smitty cdrfs); then mount it read only.

You need to connect the LPAR (z machine) to the server exactly where the installation files are available.

Third, you will most likely have to delete or reconfigure devices to make the new LPAR functional (I cover this in more detail later).

AMS intelligently flows memory from one logical partition (LPAR) to another for increased utilization and flexibility of memory.

You could import the volume group again on the source LPAR using importvg.

But maybe you do want to create a spare volume group on the source LPAR and create a file system and copy data to it.

Once AME has been unlocked for a system, an administrator is free to create LPARs with memory expansion enabled.

Make sure each client adapter on the LPAR points to a different VIO Server.

The "suspend" of the LPAR itself lasted no more than two seconds.

To view usage data for an individual LPAR, I can select the LPAR name under the LPAR(s) list on the left-hand side.

Among other criteria it defines the cookie-cutter LPAR that most customers will receive by default when they request a new LPAR build.

Often, the system takes care of itself when the cause of the alert was a temporary spike for one or more LPARs.

Each LPAR requires its own archiving strategy and DR strategy.

Since the LPAR is still active, with SAP still running, its state continues to change while the memory is copied.

The data is processed and graphs are generated for shared processor usage for each LPAR and the shared processor pools.

During the migration, there are SAP jobs running on the LPAR, as shown in Figure 8.

Were my LPAR profiles going to be recovered, and intact, on the new p6, or would I need to rebuild?

So easy, in fact, that when I first ran it on a test LPAR, I managed to lock myself out completely!

fixed-address is the IP address to be assigned to the LPAR.

This script will be invoked for dynamic LPAR CPU change events, with the hotplug actions online and offline.

The actual number and purposes of the LPARs in your data center should be defined based on the needs of your application.

Earlier in the article, we described the steps for defining an LPAR as a NIM client.

It is the least intrusive of all the options for both the original server and the new LPAR.

Log on to the HMC again and run lpar_netboot to install the operating system on the LPAR.

This document describes a testing and optimization approach used while using a single logical partition Logical Partition (LPAR) on z10.

Aside from CPU statistics, the tool can also provide data relating to memory allocation and LPAR configuration and state change history.

We also use it to monitor and report on individual LPAR (shared) processor usage.

Sharing critical system resources among LPARs may have implications for performance.

Note: You created the VIO client LPAR as a blank slate so that you can define this easily.

If you are using dynamic LPARs, take extra care to ensure the LPARs do not grow across socket boundaries.

The disk name on the target LPAR (hdiskN) may not be the same name as the source LPAR.

Ore more simply: an LPAR consuming all of its entitled CPU capacity will report 100 percent utilization.

This means that unless an Application Sizing Review reveals a need for more resources, the standard LPAR CPU settings are used.

The AIX LVM provides a simple way of moving large amounts of data from one LPAR to another.

When you are doing a new Linux (SUSE) installation on an LPAR, you have to install it through the network.

Uncapped allows the LPAR to use more processing units than is currently allocated.

It also identified how software can monitor for changes in these dynamic LPAR resources.

And method B is also perfectly viable by network booting the client LPAR and performing the migration using a NIM.

Mapping disks to both VIO servers and creating network control channels gives VIO client LPARs two legs to stand on.

Assign each LPAR a unique GUID index within each physical computer to distinguish the different LPARs using InfiniBand.

You can use LPARs to divide a single piece of System z hardware into separate virtual pieces of hardware.

The operating system manages AME, and it is configurable on a per LPAR basis by the virtualization control point.

It enables the migration of an active (or inactive) LPAR from one physical system to another.

Also, prior to the migration, I'd recommend reducing the LPAR's memory update activity.

It's also configurable for each LPAR on the managed systems; meaning you can enable this feature on whichever LPARs your heart desires.

The other two LPARS were also being heavily used during these test runs, for development troubleshooting and testing.

Then, the VIO client LPARs are told the virtual Ethernet adapters and VLAN numbers they should access through an SEA mapping.

This script eliminates the need to have a separate AutoYaST file with a hard-coded IP address for each LPAR.

If you set the image to read-only, you can present it to several LPARs simultaneously.

Managing LPARs in the system is made possible by the hardware management console (HMC).

Partition mobility refers to the ability to move an entire running AIX LPAR from one physical server to another.

The first and most important thing in moving to a new LPAR is to ensure that sufficient resources are available.

While logged in as root to nim_lpar, enter smitty nim_mkres from the shell and select SPOT as the Resource type.

Download and install the IBM productivity tools support for dynamic LPAR.

After restarting the LPAR as a shared memory partition, I used lparstat and vmstat to view the LPARs' shared memory settings.

Desired number of virtual processors: You can assign a virtual processor to every 0. 1 processing unit allocated to the LPAR.

Make sure the client LPAR is powered off or inactive before modifying the properties.

But wouldn't it be nice to share any "unused" or "idle" memory on an LPAR with other LPARs and give it back when it is really needed?

If you have two LPARs on a system, you would need at least two Ethernet cards and two disk controllers.

Within three months of identifying the capacity problem, UPMC had uncapped 90% of its LPARs and reclaimed 50% of its processors.

To limit hardware costs, you can safely run nodes from multiple cells on a single machine or LPAR.

Shut down your VIO servers, and activate them from these profiles, or dynamically add the same resources to the LPARs.

And, an errant rmlv command can completely knock a VIO client LPAR off of the wire.

To do this, I would first need to shut down each LPAR and change the profile from dedicated to shared.

It also makes it possible to perform IOS upgrades on the VIO servers dynamically without affecting the VIO client LPARs.

hardware ethernet specifies the MAC address of the LPAR.

Remove the volume group and its disks from the source LPAR.

Login as root to nim_lpar, run smitty nim_mkres fastpath and select mksysb as resource type to be defined.

Storage: IBM TotalStorage DS8100 attached to the LPAR through four fiber channel adapters.

Because the entitled capacity of an LPAR can be changed dynamically.

The configuration data for each LPAR in the cell is included in the same consistency group.

The number of LPARs depicted in each data center is for illustrative purposes only.

Both LPARs were existing systems (using dedicated memory), with existing workload.

And using DLPAR, we remove these virtual adapters from the LPAR definition.

The downside with both of these methods is that they both require significant downtime on the LPAR while the migration takes place.

Once the page refreshes, choose the LPAR you are going to modify.

Select Medium (50%) capability as the allocation of the InfiniBand resources for each LPAR, which is the middle setting from Step 1 .

Make sure the LPARs are inactive before performing changes to the network device properties.

Make sure you make the virtual disk devices of the LPAR the same size on each of the VIO Servers.

Use the pull-downs to map the VLAN-aware VEAs to the client LPAR's adapter on this screen.

Note that these steps must be performed from nim_lpar by using smitty nim_mkmac command.

In some instances, you may be working remotely and have to build a new LPAR or install some filesets that aren't available on a NIM server.

This removes references to the disks on the source LPAR, but it doesn't affect the data on the disks.

The run data for each LPAR in the environment is included in the same consistency group.

Figure 4 shows that the LPAR is configured with virtual Ethernet and virtual SCSI adapters.

This configuration uses OSA communication on a single LPAR.

When you need to build an LPAR or install AIX software quickly, making an ISO image available to the VIO client takes seconds.

We varied the number of cores available to the LPAR.

LPARs with higher Weight values receive higher priority when shared pool resources are fully used.

When there is more than one LPAR competing for available processing cycles, the hypervisor allocates those cycles by weighting.

Likewise, the VIOS used to serve DS8300 storage to client LPARs, will also remain.

Micro-partioning allows an LPAR to share processors with other different partitions.

In the land of the LPARs, in an environment where one has five isolated environments, you would need to create 15 LPARs.

One of the most important is that all network connectivity from the LPAR must be virtualized, meaning it must communicate using a VIOS.

In fact, unlike a logical partition (LPAR), no physical resources are actually required to build a WPAR.

Configure the disks, volume group, and file systems on the target LPAR.

AIX will dynamically allocate memory based on workload utilization and LPAR configuration.

Verify the partition profile data for each AIX LPAR and VIOS is correct on the HMC.

Existing networks can have a higher degree of load variability, requiring resource load balancing among multiple client LPARs.

The install data for each of the LPARs in the cell is included in the same consistency group.

Select Shared to assign processing units to the LPAR from the shared processing pool (see Figure 8).

Plus, SLES 9 is a 64-bit operating system, and multiple Domino partitions (DPARs) can be installed in a single LPAR.

More specifically, it is very simple to look at the number of physical CPUs used per LPAR for an entire frame on one Ganglia screen.

We used a dedicated Logical Partition (LPAR) with two physical 1. 65 GHz CPUs defined to it.

In this example, the LPAR would have access to the additional 0. 7 processing units needed for the workload.

Now that LPAR will not necessarily be limited to 100 percent utilization.

Although UPMC uses weighting (see Table 2 and Table 3), it does not rely on it to ensure service levels for LPARs.

The higher the weight, the larger the portion of cycles the LPAR will get.

Unused memory can be used to build more LPARs or allocated to those who need it.

Refer to the output below, from one of the LPARs before and after the upgrade.

In this method, disks are assigned to the VIO servers and mapped directly to the VIO client LPARs.

In addition to regular business cycles, the 20% is kept available to allow LPAR processor growth for unplanned load increases.

In this step, you configure the DHCP server to provide network boot information to new LPARs.

Now that we have created a rootvg WPAR, let us migrate it to another LPAR using IBM Director 6. 1. 2 with the WPAR manager plug-in.

The LPAR is now active again.

The LPAR has a single volume group, rootvg for the operating system, on a single disk.

Production, test, and development LPARs are all mixed on all Power servers.

VIOs Virtual tape drive support for client LPARs is another new offering that allows client LPARs access to SAS tape resources.

The newly created and installed LPAR uses a static IP address.

The pSeries test machine used was a p570 configured into multiple LPARs.

The component (typically an LPAR, JVM, or application) performs optimally when the cache is warm.

Table 1 shows the high-level configuration of each LPAR.

The HMC command that kicks off a network install is lpar_netboot.

Basically, this shifts memory dynamically from idle LPARs to active ones.

This disk would be used by the client LPAR for rootvg (boot disk).

Mobility activity is logged on the LPAR and the source and target VIOS.

They are usually created within LPARs, though they can be created on full physical servers that are not partitioned.

These processors are shared among three LPARs, each of which runs a separate virtual operating system.

These LPARs span the range of environments and application types at UPMC.

Checking there are no dedicated physical adapters assigned to the LPAR.

The LPAR resumes execution on the target system.
