IFCONFIG

If you perform an ifconfig command, you will see that the virtual adapter individual VLAN mapped to the LPAR.

In the example, look at the settings using ifconfig (look at the last line, which references some of the tunables mentioned earlier).

ifconfig, hostname, netstat, and ps have been optimized to run in the global environment and within WPARs.

If you login to each of the management virtual images, the ifconfig command shows all the defined network adapters.

Note that ifconfig will not update the Object Data Manager (ODM), so on a reboot, it will revert to the previous values.

A vote is taken, followed by the ifconfig commands that are issued to claim the floating resource IP address.

Ifconfig won't show aliases interfaces, and under some circumstances, ipchains will silently fail to clear packet counters.

This issue comes up when the binary program ifconfig is not within the user's defined PATH variable.

Use ifconfig (see Listing 8) to make sure that the interface reported is configured to AIX and showing as UP and RUNNING.

But be advised that any changes you make with ifconfig are not saved in the Object Data Manager (ODM) and on a reboot will be lost.

ifconfig generates a lot of output, but it's the quickest way of making sure your network connection has been assigned an IP address.

You can view the specific interface settings using either ifconfig or lsattr.

iwconfig is like ifconfig, but for wireless network cards.

Use ping to check that the gateway reported by ifconfig is contactable from your host.

You can display it by running the ifconfig command.

The ifconfig line shows the eth0: 0 device being created dynamically to maintain service.

You can change these options (by interface) by using SMIT, chdev, or ifconfig.

Once the command completes you can check that the network card has been properly configured using the command ifconfig eth0. 101 .

Under Linux, you can get some basic network statistic information by using the ifconfig tool (see Listing 7).

ADAPTER_UP: Triggered when an interface is brought up (for example, using ifconfig, smit tcpip, and chdev commands).

If possible you should have a spare set of common programs such as ps, ls, if config, perhaps lsof, etc. , on a secure host.

ADDRESS_DELETE: Triggered when an address (alias) is removed (for example, using ifconfig and chdev commands).

First, give your network card, eth0, an IP address: ifconfig eth0 192. 168. 1. 10.
