After starting boarding school, Alissa did not speak to her father for a number of years.

When Alissa was in her early twenties, she accepted the fact that, like her sister Katy, she was gay.

Alissa explains, "If I'm learning the idea of how an atom looks, I'd make an atom out of clay. "

"The schools are set up so that you don't go on to the next level until you completely understand the material, " Alissa says.

"He never got home till late at night or early in the morning, " his oldest daughter, Alissa, said.

"I'm very proud of Alissa for not talking to me, " Haggis told me, his eyes welling with tears.

Four weeks after developing the bug, Alissa had her limbs amputated, and had to stay in hospital for another two months to recover.

Her father Manuel, 25, a menswear sales manager, said: 'Alissa is a real little fighter and we are so proud of her.

So the family immediately rang for an ambulance which took Alissa to the Princess Royal Hospital in Farnborough.

Haggis and Alissa slowly resumed communication.
