We were heavily influenced by GREP, a popular string-matching utility on UNIX, which had been created in our research center.

One of the best ways to find where the code for a feature you saw in the program resides is to use the grep command.

Industry, or, at least, the recruiters-who-use-grep, are surely clamoring for Java to be taught.

We initially decided to use the JAR tool to list the contents of the various runtime JARs and grep for the classes in question.

Some of the newer versions of grep (such as GNU grep) highlights the regexp in color when you use the --color option, as shown in Figure 1.

In fact, searching a collection of files is so common that grep has its own option to recurse a file system hierarchy.

searches the input files for lines containing a match to a given pattern list.

grep -l prints the name of the file if a match is found and then stops further matching in that file.

You can also use command line tools such as grep in UNIX.

If you quickly run the command lpstat -t | grep lp1 just after the selpg command, you should see the job in the queue for lp1.

In addition to -i, there are several other command-line options to change grep's output. The most relevant are the following
