At the very least being public does not seem to have been a disadvantage for GLG.

They have to sign an agreement not to share any material, non-public information, but GLG does not listen in to the calls to enforce this.

And since the start of 2010 many funds have been opening offices in Asia, including giants like Moore Capital, GLG and Paulson & Co.

In contrast GLG has over 40 funds and a more varied bag of tricks, including long-only, macro and emerging-market funds.

Among the millions of interactions that GLG sets up, "there are probably a couple of bad apples, " admits one former GLG executive.

In addition, the plants produce about 22 percent more leaves per acre, the company said.

GLG wants to sell its services to a wider range of clients.

"The likes of GLG and Tudor are increasingly doing some semi-hedge fund products and some long-only products, " he says.

But going public may be hard unless GLG can rebrand itself.

GLG's Mr Grieves says this is because Silicon Valley is so dominant in the technology, media and telecoms field.

Some speculate that Man may have paid too much for GLG, by valuing it at nearly 20 times 2009 earnings.

On May 17th the world's largest publicly traded hedge fund said it would buy another big hedge fund, GLG Partners, for $1. 6 billion.

Only later, when Mr Jabre left GLG, did the firm ask the FSA to withdraw his licence.

But compared with what GLG would have cost to buy before the financial crisis, its price seems more reasonable.

GLG Partners, one of the U. K. 's largest hedge funds, is planning to open both a Hong Kong and Beijing office soon.
