The company's personal systems group is 'core to H-P's portfolio, ' she said.

H-P isn't the only PC maker trying to boost falling desktop sales.

The suspected cause of at least some of these cancers is human papillomavirus, or H. P. V.

Yet if H-P ever was going to escape the low-margin PC business, now would seem to have been an opportune moment.

"That is a compromise, " he said, adding that H. P. and the industry will "have to be increasingly sharp in their demand forecasts. "

Almost everyone in Silicon Valley can trace his or her roots back to H-P, at least a few degrees out.

An H-P spokeswoman said the company doesn't comment on rumors and speculation.

In the wake of that incident, Mr. Apotheker in an interview blamed Mr. Hurd for not investing in H-P's services and software businesses.

Before joining H. P. as its chief executive in 2005, Mr. Hurd was chief executive of NCR, which had the leading data warehousing technology.

Todd Bradley, who heads the PC unit, added that H-P customers 'from New York to Shanghai' advised the company against the spinoff plan.

The relationship between the two companies began to fray after Mr. Hurd resigned from H. P. last month.

Meanwhile, with all H-P's 13 directors up for re-election at the next annual meeting, investors can voice their displeasure.

Mr. Prophet oversees all hardware purchasing for H. P. 's $65-billion-a-year global supply chain, which feeds its huge manufacturing engine.

Neither answer seems to deter Oracle investors, who were cheered by the hiring of H-P's former top boss.

H-P reaffirmed its profit outlook for its fiscal year ending in late October but said it had 'less certainty' on revenue.

An H-P spokesman declined to say how many TouchPads have been sold, saying the company 'continually evaluates pricing for its products. '

An H-P spokeswoman says the company has used its huge size to negotiate lower component prices, allowing it to profit on lower-priced sales.

A spokesman for 3Par said the company could not comment on H-P's latest move.

In the interview, Mr. Apotheker said he wasn't happy with the performance of H-P's tablet and smartphones.

The H-P plan also marks the second time the company has looked to divest a core business to keep up with the changing tech industry.

Oracle's main database rival is I. B. M. , which, like H. P. , sells more than $100 billion in equipment and services a year.

Before joining H. P. as its chief executivein 2005, Mr. Hurd was chief executive of NCR, which had the leading datawarehousing technology.

H-P and private investigators found no violation of the sexual harassment policy at the company.

Desktop computer revenue slipped 4% in the latest quarter, H-P said, and revenue from sales of laptops slid 9% from a year ago.

Unfortunately for investors, H-P looks to be in a strategic cul-de-sac from which there may be no exit.

Never mind the years of effort H-P spent -- including a controversial merger with Compaq -- becoming the world's largest PC maker.

Analysts believe H-P retains an edge in a bidding war, due to its bigger size and cash base.

Under the provision Hurd agreed to a 24-month confidentiality agreement, which prevents him from disclosing sensitive H-P information.

On an earnings call in May, Mr. Apotheker said H-P was regaining market share in its personal-systems group, which includes PCs.

Ms. Whitman, who joined H-P's board earlier this year, conceded the company had lost investors' confidence.

H - P directors may not have been pleased to hear that Ms. Fiorina thought everything was hunky-dory .

Oracle's acquisition this year of Sun Microsystems thrust it into the computer hardware business, one of H. P. 's strong suits.

In the face of the falling prices, H-P has tried to maintain its profit margins by putting the squeeze on suppliers.

The scandal brought to a surprising end the tenure of a CEO who had placed great emphasis on upgrading H-P's ethics standards.

The compensation package from Oracle comes as Hurd could receive a potential $35 million severance from H-P as part of his departure.

By withholding information, the H-P board is only prolonging the agony and feeding the media a juicy mystery.

Mr. Apotheker said H-P is paying 'a fair price' for Autonomy, though it has less than $1 billion in annual revenue.

If Mr. Hurd lands at Oracle, he would join a company that has increasingly been stepping on some of H-P's turf.

Tablets have been the fastest growing piece of the PC market, but H-P has been largely on the sidelines.

The agreement, which takes effect next January for new PCs in the United States and Canada, displaces a similar one H. P. has with Yahoo.

H-P took its time developing the device, and Chief Executive Leo Apotheker promised the TouchPad would be 'perfect. '

In the statement, Hurd talks about how Oracle's strategy will enable the company to beat IBM, but he doesn't mention H-P.

For global operations managers like Mr. Prophet of H. P. , the Japanese disaster will be a severe test of their supply networks and systems.

The announcements triggered a 20% decline in H-P's share price, though the stock has since recovered somewhat along with the broader market.

In 2008, Oracle brought to market a 'database machine' that tightly integrated software with H-P's hardware under an exclusive partnership.

Mr. Apotheker would be H-P's third CEO to depart under fire in six years.

H-P said it is also considering providing compensation to customers who have already paid for the shipping and repair of affected computers.

Ellison's suggestion that H-P might try to keep Mr. Apotheker from appearing in court.

Mr. Hurd was investing in growth, expanding H-P's sales force while acquiring network-equipment company 3Com and mobile-device company Palm.

Apple rivals like H-P and Dell offered discounts weeks earlier than usual this holiday season, dropping some prices by as much as 50%.

Any comedown for H-P's PC sales would mark a major reversal for the business, which has been growing robustly for the past few years.

Remember that H-P has a rich history as a maker of electronics and then computing gear.

"There's a lot happening in the data center, and being in the middle of that is crucial for H. P. , " Mr. Bourgeois said.

H-P's PC business will be closely watched when the Palo Alto, Calif. , giant reports quarterly earnings on Tuesday.

Ms. Fisher was hired by Mr. Hurd's office to work on a freelance basis for H-P between late 2007 and late 2009 at customer events.

His first misstep was raising H-P's outlook after taking over in November, only to cut it each quarter since.

He also defended H-P's decision not to conduct a formal CEO search.

Mr. Apotheker didn't immediately publicly discuss a strategy for H-P and how it might grow, leading to angst on Wall Street.

Dell and H-P are looking for new areas of growth beyond low-margin personal computers.

So H-P is embarking on a new strategy to find commercial uses for the technology.

Steve Jobs worked at H-P when he was starting out.

Ever since that confusing announcement, H-P has faced questions about what it wants to be.

The board's final vote over H-P's leadership occurred Thursday, said this person.

'I know that H-P has disappointed investors in recent quarters, and we're not happy about it, ' she said.

She said H-P doesn't plan any recall of the affected PCs in China.

A large chunk of H-P's revenue from outsourcing and printer supplies is relatively stable.

Stephen DeWitt, an H-P senior vice president, said if H-P sells a lot of TouchPads, developers will make more programs for it.

But they did find that Mr. Hurd violated H-P's Standards of Business Conduct.

Despite H-P's challenges, if Mr. Apotheker departs, the job should be attractive for somebody.

'It certainly shakes things up, ' said Tim Ghriskey, the co-founder of $2 billion fund Solaris Group, which holds H-P shares.

Here's how H-P's tune has changed (or evolved, perhaps) about its PC business.

We've already started developing the script, and we've started preproduction as well. So I do "H. P. "

Until it does, it is hard to have any confidence in the judgment of H-P's board -- and as an investor , I'd avoid the stock.

Tell the new CEO, Leo Apotheker, that Mr. Hurd 'left H-P in great shape. '

H-P's stock price is 5. 8% higher in recent trading, adding more than $3 billion to H-P's market value so far this morning.

Anything related to Mr. Hurd's departure is plainly material, since on Monday the news shaved $8. 7 billion off H-P's market value.

H-P had to hastily rearrange its May earnings call.

At Best Buy, an H-P laptop with a 15. 6-inch-screen was recently selling for a nearly 25% discount at $549. 99.

H-P earlier this year introduced its TouchPad tablet, but it hasn't sold well.

H-P declined to comment on Mr. Ellison's latest statement.

H-P wasn't available to comment for this article.

H-P's market share is still tops, with 18% of global PC shipments by volume in the third quarter, according to IDC.

Admittedly since H-P announced in mid-August it was exploring a spinoff of the PC business, it has backtracked a little every day.

H-P's price per share has fallen more than 45% since Mr. Apotheker took over.

Apple and other customers, including H-P and Dell, have said they are investigating the deaths.

Dumping hardware may actually help H-P's business.

I liked typing on the HP Mini's generous keyboard, which H-P says is 92% of full size.

And it seemed he did, driving up H-P's profits, revenue and share price.

H-P is currently the world's biggest maker of PCs by shipments and revenue.

Mr. Apotheker emphasized the importance in China of 'cloud services, ' a thrust of H-P's global strategy since he joined in November.

While 3Com expands H-P's offering for data centers, an attractive area, its sales add just 1% to H-P's total.

And now H-P has lost faith in the personal computer, the business that built H-P (and Microsoft) and so many other companies.

An H-P spokeswoman also declined to comment.

Go to Wall Street and tell long, confusing stories about how you are transforming H-P from a low-margin to a high-margin business.

H-P and other companies use similar measures and codes of conduct.

While the legal matter has been resolved, Oracle and H. P. will continue to have a more tense business relationship than in the past.

H-P claims 9 hours of continuous video playback, but that's with Wi-Fi turned off.

Watch Moody's threaten to downgrade H-P's credit.

In a brief interview, Mr. Apotheker dismissed the idea that H-P was lagging rivals overall in China.

Dell and H-P were both down slightly in the evening session.

Not that H-P has done badly in the business.

H-P's operating margins were just 6% when Hurd took the reins.

H-P sold 1. 9 million PCs in China in the fourth quarter of 2009, 14. 3% of the total, up from 10. 9% a year earlier.

H-P's price cut also marks a shift in strategy.

Perhaps its most striking attribute is price. You can get one for as little as $699, far below the $1, 200 base price of the H-P TouchSmart.

H-P estimates that the Mini 311's battery will last for six hours and 25 minutes.

Act surprised as H-P's stock plunges more than 40%.

H-P does sell a physical wireless keyboard for $70.

For one thing, it makes it easier to argue that he can't perform his new job adequately without disclosing H-P's information.

H-P and Nokia declined to comment.

H-P now sells cartridges for as little as $10, and Lexmark for as low as $5.

H-P has come to the same conclusion.

In August, H. P. struck a $11. 7 billion deal to buy the British software maker.

On Amazon. com last week, an H-P Pavilion laptop with a 14. 1-inch screen was marked down from $1, 074 to $760.

So why is H-P holding onto the PC business?

As of Dec. 10, Microsoft's shares were down 10 percent for the year, while H-P and Cisco had fallen 17. 5 percent each.

Bradley, who was tapped earlier this month to lead H-P's strategy in China across business units.

His total compensation at H-P last fiscal year was $30. 3 million.

The base model of the H-P has a 22-inch screen.

He called H-P's stock 'ridiculously cheap, ' saying he plans to buy some at the first opportunity he has.

Oracle and H. P. have a long history of selling technology together.

This is a shift in business for H-P, which is something that happens all the time.

H-P and Dell have invested heavily to expand in China but still trail far behind Lenovo in the country.

Dell said it wouldn't match H-P's latest offer.

' She said she ruled out buying an H-P computer because of last year's reports about its faulty products.

One is that competitors, such as Dell and IBM, will take advantage of H-P's internal struggles to score big corporate deals.

On Wednesday, shares of H-P gained 6. 7% to $23. 98 at 4 p. m. on the New York Stock Exchange.

Shares in H-P climbed 3. 6% to $24. 45 in 4 p. m. trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Since 2002, Dell has made 10 acquisitions while IBM has made 75 and H-P has done 42, according to Sanford C. Bernstein.

Sales in H-P's PC business fell more than 5% in the April quarter from last year, compared with Apple's nearly 32% increase in Mac sales.

H-P's market share in China increased to 14% in the first half of this year from just 5% in 2005, according to IDC.

H-P's shares fell 4. 9%, or $1. 18, to $22. 80 Thursday amid a broad decline in the stock market.
