When the American novelist Jonathan Safran Foer had his first child, he decided to investigate what he should be feeding him.

But Foer's book reminds us that the cognitive advance of our species is not inexorable.

"Moonwalking With Einstein" does just that: It takes the reader on Foer's journey from memory novice to national champion.

He acted as Foer's trainer during preparations for the book and helped him achieve his championship performances.

"This is about incremental changes for the most part, not a revolution, " said Bert Foer, president of the American Antitrust Institute.

It became these things later in lesser works by lesser artists: Michael Nyman, Takashi Murakami, Tracey Emin and Jonathan Safran Foer.

Ultimately, Foer imagines, the commands would come straight from your cerebral cortex.

The statistics vary, but Jonathan Safran Foer, author of Eating Animals, estimates that 18 percent of U. S. college students are vegetarian.

Joshua Foer's engrossing best seller "Moonwalking With Einstein" recalls one colossal example of what we trade for progress.

"This is the story of the next half-century, " Foer told me, "as we become effectively cyborgs. "

As Foer points out, we no longer need to remember telephone numbers. Our mobile phones do that for us.

Foer said, "What makes things memorable is that they are meaningful, significant, colorful. "
