• British and American English use different words for the roads that connect towns and cities. Motorways, (for example, the M57) in BrE, freeways, highways or interstates, (for example State Route 347, Interstate 94, the Long Island Expressway) in NAmE, are large divided roads built for long-distance traffic to avoid towns. 表示连接城镇的公路时，英式英语和美式英语的用词各异。motorway 用于英式英语（如 57 高速路），freeway、highway 或 interstate 用于美式英语（如 347 州道、94 州际公路、长岛高速公路），它们均指城外分道行驶的长途高速公路。
