- (1893-1971) a US diplomat (= person who represents his or her country abroad). He directed the Marshall Plan to help Europe after World War II and, as Secretary of State under President Truman, helped in 1949 to create the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. He received a Pulitzer Prize in 1970 for his book Present at the Creation: My Years in the State Department.“Great Britain has lost an empire and has not yet found a role.”
