- a beautiful part of the Appalachian Mountains that separates Tennessee from North Carolina. It gets its name from the thin clouds like smoke which often cover the valleys. The highest point is Clingman's Dome (6 642 feet/2 026 metres). Most of the area is within the Great Smoky Mountains national park which was established in 1934 and was made a World Heritage Site in 1983.
