/ðə ˌfaɪv ˌsɪvəlaɪzd ˈtraɪbz/
- a name used to refer to five native North American nations from the south-eastern US, the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole. They were considered to have developed their own versions of US laws and European American culture. They were forced to leave their own lands and settle in the Indian Territory.
This term is now often considered offensive. These nations whose members now live in Oklahoma can be called The Five Tribes of Oklahoma.
