the Everglades
/ði ˈevəɡleɪdz/
/ði ˈevərɡleɪdz/
- a large, low, wet region in the southern part of the US state of Florida. Some Seminole people still live there. There are alligators (= large reptiles) and many varieties of birds and snakes there. Its area is about 5 000 square miles/12 950 square kilometres. Dry weather has recently damaged parts of the Everglades, and there is concern about the region's future. The Everglades national park was created in 1947 and made a World Heritage Site in 1979.
