St Brendan

- (c. 485-c. 578) an Irish monk who travelled around Ireland and Scotland. According to legends he was also the first European to sail to America. In 1977 a group of people sailed from Ireland to America in a leather boat like the ones used in the 6th century, to prove that it was possible.
