- (c. 1585-1622) a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who helped the Pilgrim Fathers to survive when they landed in America in 1621. He taught them to plant corn and to hunt and fish. He had learned to speak English after he was caught by English sailors in 1615 and taken to be sold into slavery, but he escaped.
