school uniform
noun/ˌskuːl ˈjuːnɪfɔːm/
/ˌskuːl ˈjuːnɪfɔːrm/
[countable, uncountable]- special clothes worn by pupils at a particular school. Wearing school uniform is a British tradition and is rarely found in the US. In most schools pupils have to wear clothes of a particular colour, often dark blue, black or dark green. Some schools, especially private schools, require pupils to wear special clothes which have to be bought from a particular shop. School uniform often includes a special striped tie in the school colours for both girls and boys. At very traditional schools, for example old public schools like Eton, pupils may have to wear very old-fashioned clothes in a style that dates from the 19th century or even earlier.
