- (c. 1595-1617) a girl from the Powhatan people of eastern Virginia, who in 1607 saved the life of Captain John Smith when he was about to be killed by her father, Chief Powhatan. She was taken as a hostage by colonists in 1613, became a Christian and was given the name Rebecca. A year later, she married the English colonist John Rolfe and in 1616 went to England, where she created a lot of interest. She became ill and died on the way home. A version of her story was told in the Walt Disney cartoon film Pocahontas (1995).
