- (1800-1831) an African American man born into slavery who in 1831 led a group of enslaved and free black people in a rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia in which over 50 white people were killed. This was called the Southampton Insurrection. Turner and 17 others were hanged and many more black people were killed in retaliation. The rebellion almost ended abolitionism in the South and led to strict new laws to control slaves.
