Herbert Henry Asquith

- (1852-1928) a British Liberal prime minister (1908-16). His government introduced the first benefits of the welfare state, such as pensions for old people. He was also responsible for reducing the powers of the House of Lords and for leading Britain into the First World War. He was made an earl in 1925.
